Apparent Suicide

8/15/2012 12:16 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Bob Birch played bass with Elton John and Billy Joel.Robert Wayne Birch, a bass guitarist who played with Elton John and Billy Joel among many other huge artists, is dead after apparently having shot and killed himself this morning ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... Birch was found around the corner from his home, dead from a gunshot wound to the head.  We're told all signs point to a self-inflicted wound.

We're told authorities have not found a suicide note and there were no apparent signs of drug use.

Birch has been playing with Elton John since 1992, and was also involved in the biggest single of all time, "Candle in the Wind 1997."

Birch has also performed with legends like Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Cher, Sting, The Backstreet Boys, The Spice Girls, Clint Black and many others.

Here's Birch with Elton last year on David Letterman -- one of their final live performances together.

News releases should NEVER NEVER EVER state "apparent suicude". If you don't know-simply state that one has died and info is forthcoming. Sensational headlines and news stories just to catch an audience. Shameful.

I went to college and was friends with his son and when I saw this my jaw dropped. My heart goes out to him and his family. Considering how humble and down to earth his son is, I know that he was great father. RIP.

Suicide is always sad, when people get to that point they don't feel any hope, hope is what we cling to during the worst times, sad some people can't find a way to see past the depression and realize better times are around the corner, never know what tomorrow will bring.

Elton John literally showed his bum and was hospitalized on Wednesday. Today, his long-time bassist took of 20 years his life.

I don't know that there is a connection but I can't help but suspect there is one.

See Elton, this is why you should be a little nicer to people. Human beings are not your personal verbal punching bag. Deal with your issues and stop unloading your abuse onto others.

The comments that Bob had severe pain are true. He was involved in a devastating accident in the mid-nineties. Elton flew him home on his private jet, and gave him his job back when he recovered.

There is no doubt in my mind that he was in extreme pain - he loved his gig with Elton. RIP - condolences to the family. He was a super guy.

I was thinking about this guy, as a musician he was working with elton, & he was in the big time, why would somebody end it all when it seems that he was on a level that all musicians strive for, I guess it just goes to show you that money & success really doesn't buy happiness people. I think everybody needs to be thankful for whatever level of Life your living on. D@mn life is to short.
