Joey Kovar -- the troubled "Real World" star who appeared on "Celebrity Rehab" -- was found dead at a friend's home near Chicago this morning ... and family members believe drugs are to blame ... TMZ has learned.

Kovar was 29 years old.

Kovar's rep tells TMZ ... Joey was discovered by a female friend early this morning who noticed blood coming out of Joey's ears and nose.

The woman called 911 ... and authorities rushed to the scene where he was pronounced dead.

Kovar had famously battled drug issues -- and sought help for cocaine and ecstasy during his stint on "Celeb Rehab."

While on "Real World: Hollywood," Kovar entered rehab halfway through the season for alcohol and drugs, admitting he'd struggled with substance abuse for years. It was a pretty powerful moment on the show.

Blaming the treatment team is a stupid as blaming the users family. Addicts are addicts and generally the drug wins in the battle. It is a sad truth.

This isn't about Dr. Drew. This is about a human being who died an untimely death due to addiction. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. R.I.P. Joey.

Why does everyone blame Dr. Drew? Please look up the statistics on ALL substance abusers post-rehab/treatment and then see if it matches with Dr. Drew. Joey hasn't been on TV in years, he could have sought help on his own and worked a program. Sad that he didn't make it at such a young age, with children.

Dr. Drew, like many others, have sold out. Sad because he was not a charlatan like Dr. Phil but Drew has lost all credibility.

very sad. he has very naturally bulgy eyes he must have looked super high when taking those types of drugs, must have been preeetty noticeable with eyes like that. Completely irrelevant, I know. My condolences to the family. Never easy.

Such a sad story. Addiction is an awful disease. Unfortunately, not everyone can be saved. You can only give them the tools to make the change, but ultimately it is up to that person to follow thru. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

Dr. Drew is to blame only if you believe that without his show these attention seeking whores would seek traditional forms of treatment. My opinion is that Drew's show attracts people not interested in rehab and are only participating to get on TV. To me, he can only help.
