Ryan Lochte

Jeah! Copyright Battle

Looming with Compton Rapper

8/18/2012 5:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0817-ryan_lochte_mc_eihtU.S. Olympic hero Ryan Lochte might have an unexpected speed bump on his way to trademarking the phrase "Jeah!" in the form of 90s rap star MC Eiht, who claims the phrase was his long before it was Lochte's.

Eiht tells TMZ he coined the phrase back in 1988 and is insulted to hear Lochte is trying to claim it as his own now. Eiht tells us, "Why try and trademark something his ass didn’t even create? I am mad that he isn’t giving me proper recognition for taking my saying. He is just disrespectful."

The Compton's Most Wanted rapper tells TMZ he's not so much concerned about the money as he is the "respect and the truth."

Eiht says he plans on sending a cease and desist letter urging Lochte to stop using his phrase.

Lochte's manager tells us, "Ryan has been using JEAH for years," adding, "This is the first I have heard of this claim by MC Eiht."

I don't think either of them need to worry--Lochte's 15 minutes are about up, and very few people have heard of the other guy.

Doesnt seem Lochte is capable of much more than trademarking a word he made up. Guess you gotta take what you can get.

The Invisible Man

The link is to, "Straight Up Menace", a song from 1993, where you can hear MC Eiht say, "jeah" at the beginning a few times. I'm sure he's just frustrated to know that Ryan is aiming to capitalize and cash in on something he's used.

Lochte needs to find something more intellectual to do, rather than try to trademark a meaningless word from hip-hop. This is stupid...try something more respectable and admirable like "Ryan Lochtes Summer Swim Camp for Disabled Childen." but then again his own mother said all he does is party and have one night stands maybe giving isn't in his nature only taking kind of like in this case.

Lochte's manager tells us, "Ryan has been using JEAH for years," adding, "This is the first I have heard of this claim by MC Eiht."

Oh really? So Lochte admits to having stollen it from Jeezy thereby admitting he doesn't know the origin of the phrase at all. If he likes Jeezy he'll like Mc Eiht. Have a listen to his old stuff and watch Menace to Society Ryan. That way you can tell your lawyer that no matter how many years you were saying it, you were a baby when MC Eiht popularized the term in his music and a cult classic film. You're looking stupid right now and hot as you are, I hope MC Eiht fights you on this. You're losing cool point my dude.

Really? Fighting over who is entitled to "respect" and who "created" the dubious "jeah." If this is the sum total of your creativity, I say, "get back to the drawing board."

"Jeah." It's like claiming credit for roadkill.

that word is used multiple times in all of mc eihts songs. that ryan guy would loose this case in court.

I deal in Trademarks every day. I just did some research on this and MC doesn't have a leg to stand on. Ryan's Trademark application will go through just fine no matter what MC says or does, simply because MC didn't get his self to the Trademark office and file. Ryan has filed, MC never has, case closed.

How about we worry about the fact that no matter how good of a swimmer ryan is and i am a fan, bottom line is education was certainly sacrificed for sports. That my friend makes him a hero in america as unfortunate as that is. By the way why is it that many non blacks always refer to black as being in the hood. I'm black and i have and will always be considered the other one percent. Does that make me different than other blacks I think not.
