Director Tony Scott

Commits Suicide

Jumps Off L.A. Bridge

8/19/2012 8:50 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Famed director Tony Scott -- who directed "Top Gun" among many other major films -- jumped to his death today off an L.A. bridge ... this according to the L.A. County Coroner.

According to the Coroner, 68-year-old Scott -- Ridley Scott's brother -- jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island around 12:30pm.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn said a suicide note was found in Scott's Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge.

Scott directed such films as "Top Gun," "Beverly Hills Cop II," "Enemy of the State," and "The Taking of Pelham 123."

Authorities used sonar equipment to find Scott's body in the port's murky waters. His body was recovered at approximately 4:30pm ... four hours after he jumped.

His body has since been turned over to coroner officials.

I never liked his fast food flashy hollywood directing style, but I'm sad to see him go. RIP Tony.

Why couldn't it have been Michael Bay instead???

Ok, I did a little research. And it turns out, Tony Scott was to do the remake of The Warriors. And one of the shots was to be filmed on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, Calif. Instead of the infamous meeting in the park, the gangs were going to meet up at the bridge. Here's the link to his thoughts on the project. Hope this helps Harvey?

My condolences to his family and friends. We do not know the reason for this tragedy ... hopefully more information is forthcoming to help make sense of this for those he left behind.

Wash. Hts. Girl

Usually, the drugged out losers sort of half want to kill themselves by taking too many drugs not believing that maybe one time is one time too many, and they O.D. Over and out. However this guy was clear as day that he wanted to end it. There is no imagining how badly a person must feel to want to jump off a bridge. I say, in part, the psychiatric medical community failed him. So, many pharmaceuticals on the market for this and that, and he couldn't be helped? Didn't his family realize that something was wrong? Truly sad...I hope he is at least happier wherever he is now.

I was on the phone with my sister (who works at the location) and she saw it happen from her station. It was so sad & horrible to watch and not be able to do anything. I didnt believe her, so she sent me photo's of the CSI investigating and searching for his body. :-(

This is terrible news. He made the best movies in Hollywood. Why did you do it Tony, Why ?

Tony might be recently received news of his diagnosis of cancer and he did not desire to die a lingering death. Or he has a family hidden diagnosis of Bipolar affective disorder.
Which can see such people displaying great and awesome genius likened skills, reaching high and lofty height within our society. Only to find that they are suddenly overcome by periods of depressive low and suicidal mood.
For those with Bipolar are 15% more likely to commit suicide that those with other prevailing cognitive impairment illnesses.
Either way a suicide is a tragic lost.
Praying peace to his family, loved ones and friends in this hour of mourning
