Olympic Champ Tyler Clary

Declines White House Invite

... I'd Rather Race Cars

9/12/2012 12:10 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0911_tyler-clary_gettyOlympic gold medalist Tyler Clary -- the guy who smashed Ryan Lochte's backstroke record -- turned down an invite to chill with President Obama at the White House ... all so he can race stock cars instead.

If you didn't know ... POTUS and the First Lady invited all the 2012 Olympic athletes to the White House for a special get together on September 14th ... the shin-dig includes time with the president ... a VIP reception ... the works.

But sources tell TMZ ... the swimmer has dreams of being a pro race car driver after his swimming career ends ... he's opting to be in Fontana, CA instead to test drive cars for a few days and then hit up the MAVTV 500 IndyCar event on September 15.

We're told Clary is serious about his future racing career ... he's already been courted by several IndyCar and NASCAR teams and sponsors since returning from London.

225 mph or rub elbows with the most powerful guy on the planet ... tough call?

Tyler is lucky because he would be shot in other countries. It's not an Obama thing, it's a patriotic thing. He showed disrespect to the same flag he defended at the olympics.

Awesome Tyler Clary--you are now my other sports hero along side Stanley Cup winning goaltender Tim Thomas who also turned down an invite to meet the idiot in the white house. I totally agree with his position and if i had absolutely nothing to do but watch paint dry and the grass grow i would rather do that than meet dumb ass Obama. Why do people think you have to respect the office of the president when in fact he has done nothing to gain respect. I would rather have the flu than shake hands with a man that has done more damage to our society than any other president i can recall in my lifetime.

let's face it - the guy just does not like Obama - and this was a polite way to get out of meeting him. Even if you were on the fence about Obama, you would probably go just for the experience. So he must really hate him. Good for him.

How come you don't have a button for "Eff the President! I'd rather shag a porcupine."?

Let us see, Tyler Clary was taught and assimilated the theory of his sport of choice, learned through trial and errors (maybe hundreds of swimming meetings), all while climbing steps to become the best, finally the main event came along were he showed to the world his skills and the reason he had accomplished and why he became an olypian champion as opposed to attend the invitation to meet a president-in-training, whom got where he is because of his looks and demagoguery..... I think Tyler did the right thing, in order to keep on achieveing, his goals must be set higher and he surround himself with achievers.
Good for you Tyler!

For some reason, I feel this guy just did that so he could be talked about. Because I sure as hell don't remember him. What an idiot.

let him do what he wants. The invite to the white house isnt mandatory, and his dream is to drive race cars. Dreams>anything else.
