Dennis Quaid

Sued Over Near-Fatal

Horse Accident

9/19/2012 12:50 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0918_dennis-quaid_tmz
A horseback rider claims he was nearly killed while riding a horse on Dennis Quaid's equestrian estate, and he's suing the actor over his life-threatening injuries.

70-year-old Lester Wood claims Quaid gave him permission to use a trail on the actor's property to ride a horse to a nearby park in the exclusive Pacific Palisades area of L.A.

Wood said in an interview with the Palisadian-Post newspaper, the sprinkler system next to Quaid's trail suddenly activated, spooking the horse which reared up and fell on top of him.

Next thing Wood knew he was in critical condition at a nearby hospital with a concussion, fractured scapula, torn aorta, multiple pulmonary emboli, broken ribs, a nicked liver, a tear in his bladder, fractured lumbar discs, a shattered pelvis, internal bleeding, and a torn miniscus in his knee.

Wood says he was not wearing a helmet and was looking down at his watch at the time of the accident.

0918_lester_horse_2All told, Wood says the accident cost nearly $500,000 in medical bills -- and he blames Quaid -- who no longer owns the estate -- for what he believes is a flawed trail design.

We contacted Quaid's rep for a reaction to the lawsuit.  So far, no response.

i think this is probably more a result with are messed up healthcare system, with gigantic bills that he and his family never could afford, his only recourse is to sue and try and get some money from homeowners insurance

Seems like someone had an issue handling a horse? Try a riding academy. At best Dennis may have to fill in a statement for his home owners insurance.

A good trail horse is virtually spook proof. Otherwise riders would be filling up ERs on a regular basis due to snapped twigs and bunny rabbits popping up.

Twits like this

No way that it could have been an accident or his own fault. Who knows what will happen with a CA jury though.

If I were Quaid I would deny giving this idiot permission to be on my land, then I would sue him for trespassing!

I am with PKAYG1970. This is ridiculous. Los Angeles is full of sprinkler systems and most horses are used to them. Horses are unpredictable animals and many riders buy a "pretty" horse instead of a horse well suited to their riding abilities. I hope the judge is a horseperson and kicks this frivolous lawsuit to the curb!

Wow, what an idiot!! Sorry, I've been riding ALL my life and anybody who has been around horses AT ALL knows the inherent risk involved when working and riding around them. He is a gold-seeker looking for money to pay for his OWN stupidity and all he deserves is ridicule.

I feel bad that he is 70 and could die from his injuries but to blame it on sprinklers is ridiculous. My horse would spook at anything white - rocks, plastic bags, etc..this is all normal stuff on trial. What's not normal is that he was riding a horse that flipped out so much to rear high enough to fall on top of him. Too much horse for the rider maybe. Hope it all works out for both of them and no lawsuit.
