Lisa from 'Saved By the Bell'

Bipolar Accusation

10/25/2012 3:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Lark Voorhies
-- who played Lisa Turtle on "Saved By the Bell" back in the day -- says her mother's full of crap ... insisting she is NOT bipolar, despite her mother's claims.

Lark's mother recently told People her daughter had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder -- but this week in L.A., Lark told us she finds the report "comical."

But the video is really bizarre -- Lark can't seem to complete a thought, taking abnormally long pauses and speaking nonsensically ... saying things like, "Well you know, people want to express themselves and ... you know, they will do so at free random."

"The particular trade editorial [presumably People] and I are not in agreement, however. It’s so far left from what was actually atrast [???] or brought about."

Watch the video and see for yourself.

Actually, yes, people with Bipolar will admit it. It's imperative for us to do so because people (like many of you commenting) still attach a stigma to the disorder that is undeserved. Most of us are intelligent, articulate, and capable of acknowledging our challenges.

Thanks TMZ for trivializing and adding to that stigma with such a well thought out and sympathetically written "news" piece.

Furthermore, the symptoms you've listed above in reference to Miss Voorhies are more indicative of drug use.

the artist formerly known as hand turkey

She speaks Dina Lohan. Or maybe she can't articulate when she's upset. Or maybe that blind item about a former child actress who was planning to pretend she's having a breakdown was about Lark, not Amanda Bynes.

People, stop! The woman has autoimmune disease and suffers from a bit of aphagia .... a condition affected by peripheral neuropathy and she can't always get her words out right. She isn't telling the public about it because it really is no one elses business. Maybe the reality is that her mother isn't too smart or is off her rocker and decided that this would be a "good" cover-up from telling the real truth. I wish everyone would leave her alone and quit making fun of her looks which have been affected by the autoimmune condition from which she suffers. People are curious, yes, but jesus christ .... stop making stupid assumptions about what you don't really know.

And just as an FYI, Bipolarity (a.k.a. Manic Depression) is a WIDELY overused and misused term which at once was only used as a diagnosis for manic depression - a condition in which patients suffer from a few weeks of mania in which they don't sleep and continuously make outrageous decisions and actions, followed by weeks of depression so bad they cannot leave the home. I know someone who truly has manic depression and she bought 2 an entire semi full of toilet seats and then didn't know what to do with them. She said she got them because they were on sale. Family had to convince the company to take them back but they still charged her a hefty fee for the shipping. Her depression is so bad that she stays in bed for days at a time. She's fine when she's taking her lithium, but hates to be on it because she says (and does) get a lot of things accomplished during her manic phases.

The DSM (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) - the handbook for psychiatry changes every year while new discoveries and changes are made to amend priors notions about mental health. One of the biggest diagnoses to change has been manic depression and that's largely because the term "bipolar" has come to be an equivalent word of the term like "hypoglycemic". Why? Well because anything can CAUSE hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). So it's just a general loose term that does not at all address true causation. Bipolar simply means a shift between to extremes, but that can happen to ANY person's moods ... like in people with heart arrhythmia's would don't know it. In fact, one of the most common misdiagnosed heart conditions is Mitral Valve Prolapse and it is OFTEN misdiagnosed as someone being BIPOLAR!

So you see, slapping labels on sick and suffering individuals is truly appalling. Remember this the next time you read about Britney Spears, who is not bipolar but rather has anxiety attacks from an underlying health problem.

Move on and find someone else to pick on!!

Whatever is wrong with her - I can tell you one thing... it is NOT Bi-Polar. She needs to be thoroughly examined by a neurologist and have a CT and/or an MRI

Okay, so like who is the cute, but dorky looking guy that Lark is with; and why on earth is he just letting her ramble on like that? My Lord!

She needs help and the person she was with should be ashamed for letting her speak to a pap.

It almost seems as if she has a brain injury...stuggling to find words, using the wrong words to describe what she is talking about. I hope that if she truly needs help, she gets it.

Mental illness should not be taking lightly and it's actually a good thing that the media is bringing attention to her. Maybe this will prompt her mother to try to seek a guardianship or conservatorship in order to get her the help so obviously needs.

I can't believe all the arm chair psychiatrists on here that are diagnosing Lark by watching a minute long clip of her responses to pap questions. She may have bipolar, she might not, but, it was NOT the responsibility or duty of her big mouth mother to disclose ANY conditions that her daughter might have. What the he!! was SHE thinking. If Lark has the insight, and wants to disclose this information herself, than SHE should do it.

I think TMZ had better look up the definition of bipolar again if you think that video shows any kind of bipolar activity. She is neither manically up, or depressingly down. She may have some kind of a medical problem interfering with the speech center of her brain. You can understand what she is getting at but she is choosing the wrong words in the wrong order.

That conversation, was very awkard to say the least. She seems to be out of sorts and not the same bubbly personality we remember. Time changes all, however this young women seems to be experienceing some issues. If she is, I hope she is getting the help she needs.

Honestly, She has some mental health issues going on. She speaks like a zombie, she has no complete thought, common sense or anything. She will either end up killing her self or going on a huge drug binge. Somehow I think Mom is more worried then anything.
