Olympic figure skating legend Oksana Baiul says she should be AT LEAST $1 million richer ... if not for talent agents who took advantage of the fact that she sucks at speaking English ... this according to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ.

Baiul -- who was born and raised in the Ukraine -- is suing the powerful William Morris Endeavor agency ... claiming they locked her into a series of contracts back in 1994 when she was 16 ... and she didn't understand the paperwork because of her poor grasp of the English language.

In the suit, filed in the L.A. County Superior Court, Baiul claims that because she didn't understand the contracts ... she didn't realize that she had unintentionally allowed WME to distribute portions of her earnings to people with whom she claims she has no relationship.

There's more ... Baiul also claims WME has not paid her in full for her work on several projects -- including the Oksana Baiul Jewelry Collection, various TV specials, greeting cards and two books.

Oksana claims she only realized the misdeeds when she hired a new personal manager in 2011 ... who launched an investigation into her finances.

In total, Baiul says WME owes her more than $1 million in lost earnings and other damages.

Calls to WME have not been returned.

She signed contracts without advice of an attorney...a battery of attorneys? That's almost as foolish as people who purchase homes doomed to be foreclosed upon. When you are seeking to function to keep above water, protection from drowning is called for. Ron Rehfeldt, Chicago

First off, she was 16 and had no parents, mom was dead and pop was a deadbeat who never took on the parenting role. Secondly, in figure skating most athletes at her level at that age are at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to making business deals and having no parents to deal with it made her a sitting duck.

One would think that a 16 year old can't enter into contracts but it's done all the time for performers, athletes, and others. No doubt with all the opportunities flooding her way at that time, she likely rushed into it.

Last point, most figure skaters are BROKE. You read that right, if mom, dad, lover, or spouse aren't paying their bills, they are lucky to make any money from the sport. At the age of 16 she was living and skating off of the kindness of Russian skaters and coaches. She had NO money to hire a translator or lawyer = sitting duck.

A lot of people in the skating world and outside of it care about her. I think she'll be fine either way, seeing as how she's found a nice house on a couple acres in PA. For those who don't care, then they would not negatively comment without knowing all the facts in her case and they can move on to different stories. GOD Bless :)

She was being taken care of by Viktor Petrenko and his mother in law Galina. She decided she wanted to be on her own and not have anyone running her life. Ok - so that's what she got. Poor financial advice, and no one to look out for her. Today, no one really remembers who she is.
