Marvin Gaye’s Son

Begs Lenny Kravitz...

PLEASE Don't Play My Dad

12/3/2012 3:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

1130-marvin-gaye-lenny-kravitz-gettyMarvin Gaye's son wants his childhood friend Lenny Kravitz to walk away from the role of a lifetime -- playing the Motown legend in an upcoming biopic -- and says he's shocked Lenny signed on for a project he calls "shameful."

Kravitz will play Gaye in "Sexual Healing" (working title) -- which reportedly focuses on Marvin's life in the 80s when he battled drug abuse and depression ... before his father shot and killed him in 1984.

Marvin Gaye III tells TMZ, "The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful ... [They're] trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don't even know the whole story."

Marvin's son says he and Kravitz were schoolmates -- and remain friends to this day -- so he wants to "talk to him about why he would do this."

Marvin Jr. tells us he and other family members are meeting with lawyers to try to stop production -- and added, "I would hope [Lenny] doesn't have any idea that we are against this film being done."

We reached out to Kravitz for comment -- so far, no word back.

Having a friend closely involved in production may be the next best thing for the family if the movie is going forward.

Marvin was a man that lived in a trouble time. His adversities were deep seated and he was manipulated by the forces of his time as the Black Music industry sought and struggle to get and maintain control over it's destiny. Any yet his creative genius allowed him to rise above so much of the negativity that many would have been swallowed up by.

I agree, and wouldn't support a movie that simply seeks to exploit the troubles of Marvin for the sake of profits. The better story is how this man rose to extraordinary heights in spite of the oppositions faced. While he like so many others eventually were overcome by the dark side of the music industry Marvin accomplished much with his life. This is the more relevant story that should be told and exposed! I believe telling this story will sell more tickets. (Just my opinion!)

I think Usher could do a good job in this role. He is a tall lanky guy who can sing and he could pull it off. I think he resembles Marvin Gaye more than Lenny Kravitz does. But, Hollywood should tell the whole story here and show what a genius this guy really was. He was a one-of-a-kind talent who could never be duplicated.

Lenny Kravitz is so wrong for this. It's nice to see Marvin Gays son take a stand in this. What happened to Jesse Martin. He looks like him a little. Nina Simone's daughter has also publically come out against the actress playing her mom.

To me it's not so much about his looks as it is Lenny's talent. I've seen the 2 or 3 films he's done. Lenny Kravitz is not a trained actor. I don't think he has what it takes to pull off scenes where Martin was in these drug induced binges.

Kravitz is too light complected to play Marvin Gaye - Jamie foxx or another actor of the like might be a better choice.

hard to really know what to say about this one but it sounds like Gaye III has handled this all wrong and has now created an awkward situation for Lenny. So the typical move would be for Lenny to show Gaye that he don't own him.

Why can't these heretic, money grubbing Pharisees (Lenny, Marvin III, etc.) just leave us with the almost "perfect" gift, in its genuine uniqueness, Marvin did: His almost "divine" voice! Butt...NO..."Lets make lots of GOLD and let Lenny, one of their own, bend him over, drop his pants and expose, what he really had in common with them, coming out the other end!!!" Lenny, no doubt, will receive a percentage of his grossness plus 30 pieces of silver...

Marvin III and his family has every right to feel the way that they do. Why in the world would the producers of the film only focus on the latter low point part of Marvin Gaye's life. That is not a full biography of what Marvin Gaye was all about. Marvin was a extraordinary talented singer and musician and the making of the "What's Going On" album alone deserves to be highlighted in his biopic. Because as Smokey Robinson said, that album will do down in history as the best album he has ever heard in his life, and I totally agree. It is ashame that we live in a world where people like to focus on the bad part of people's lives. There were soo many great facets to Marvin Gaye's life and the whole story needs to shown because his legacy absolutely deserves it. I wish someone else would have produced this biopic and shown Marvin's life from the beginning. That would be a true biopic to honor the life of a talented legend who blessed us with his music like no one but the late great Marvin Gaye could do.

Sincerity

I absolutely adore Marvin Gaye. He's perhaps one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of modern times. However, like many very talented performers, he did have his "demons" and focusing upon his later years may serve as a "cautionary tale" for much younger, aspiring performers. I suspect the objection to this project is primary coming from the Berry Gordy camp since Marvin Gaye III's mother is Anna Gordy, his sister. It's a well known fact that Marvin Gaye and his former brother-in-law, didn't get along very well. This script probably sheds more light on the tensions within this relationship than the Gordys feel comfortable publicly discussing. Frankly, there's no point in trying to "SUGAR COAT" the "HARSHER REALITIES" of the entertainment business that have claimed the lives of so many talented people. The "HIGHS" when a performer is at the top of the his/her career can be "STELLAR" but the "LOWS" when a performer's career is stalling can easily encourage them to "IMPLODE"!!! Everyone isn't equipped to handle this constant "ROLLER COASTER OF PRESSURES", especially those who suffer from mental illness coupled with drug addiction which, in itself, can be a "LETHAL" COMBINATION. I would love to see the R&B singer, Maxwell, portray Marvin Gaye because his music seems to be heavily influenced by Marvin Gaye and he's a rather "deep" thinker. However, Jamie Foxx would be just fine, too. When it comes to performing, he's the "REAL DEAL"!!!
