Australian DJs

Due to Suicide

12/7/2012 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

The two Australian DJs behind the Kate Middleton hospital prank that may have led to the suicide of a nurse have decided to REMOVE themselves from the airwaves.

Southern Cross Austereo, the company that owns the station, has released a statement ... saying, "SCA and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital."

SCA says the CEO has spoken with both of the DJs ... who are both "deeply shocked" over the tragedy.

The company adds, "SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy."

Interesting that SCA did NOT pull the DJs off the air immediately following the prank ... but instead waited until the backlash after Saldanha's suicide.

"out of respect" BS….this is called the cooling off period because so many people are angry with them. Give it a couple of weeks and these two jerks will be right back on the air.

What's more important and is missing from the story is the treatment and behavior showed to the nurse from her hospital peers, superiors and general public over the joke.

This was a harmless joke that unfortunately spiraled out of control but I don't think the results are the fault of the DJ's....

This nurse deals with life altering situations every single day and she kills herself for transferring a call on a prank? I don't put this all on those DJ's, she was unstable long before this.

These *******s are the one to be blame! They embarrass this women or no reason.

I would not fire the DJ's, suspend them but not fire them. This nurse did not give out any information SHE ONLY PUT THE CALL THROUGH TO ANOTHER NURSE WHO GAVE OUT THE INFO. I can't understand why she would commit suicide over putting a call through. I bet something else was going with her.

It's terrible that the woman took her own life, but let's get real. This one thing would not be enough to push anyone to commit suicide. Clearly the nurse must have had some other issues that no one could expect radio personalities on the other side of the world to have predicted. DJs do these pranks all the time. It's standard radio fare. They were obviously not expecting to have been put through and to blame them for the error of the nurse in doing so is ridiculous. I'm sure they feel horrible, but they are not to blame for her death.

Really, TMZ? You guys, of all people, are actually adding that statement to the bottom of your story. Don't make me laugh.

The radio station/network should offer to take care of her relatives and final arrangements.

Now, it will be their own turn to commit suicide. After which, their bosses and the bosses of their bosses; and on and on it will go.

This is so sad. What they did was unfair, unfunny and immature. They've caused someone to commit suicide due to the shame and humiliation, a person who had a family. All for a laugh. It has made a mockery of the NHS, which isn't perfect but isn't the worst in the world. And "suspending themselves" they are clearly so arrogant! It's them now who have to live with it knowing her children grow up without a mother.

Look, it's sad and all, but this nurse clearly had issues other than this incident. If she didn't and she only killed herself because of this prank, well... I won't say it, but no loss.
