Australian Radio Station

History of Airing

Dangerous Pranks

There's some serious hypocrisy at the Australian radio station that pulled the plug on the Kate Middleton pranksters -- because the station has a history of setting up dangerous stunts ... some purposely designed to cause panic and mayhem.

2DayFM's "Kyle and Jackie O" show aired a segment called "Desperate Acts" back in 2009 ... where a listener was given $1,000 to call her sister and convince her their mother was injured, bleeding, and in need of medical attention.

It worked ... the sister called 911 and sent paramedics speeding to the mother, who was totally fine.

That hoax prompted a police investigation.

Later in 2009 ... Kyle and Jackie O hooked up a teenager to a lie detector while her mother grilled her about her sex life. The stunt blew up in their faces when the girl suddenly revealed she had been raped when she was 12.

That segment led to another police investigation, and got the DJs a week-long suspension.

Additionally, 2DayFM has reportedly been on probation multiple times for violating Australia's broadcast code.

Despite getting repeatedly slapped on the wrist for their stunts ... 2DayFM honchos still signed off on Michael Christian and Mel Greig pulling the Kate prank.

2DayFM's response to the nurse's death has been that "no one could have predicted" the tragedy -- arguably true -- but they've also broadcast stunts where tragedy is not only foreseeable, but desired.

So, canceling the DJ's show ... hypocritical?

The same media that made their "hoax" a huge sensation, is now turning on the DJs. Are they responsible for the death of a nurse? I say no. But should they receive a taste of the wicked media they play with? I say yes.

after reading this, I found them guilty. These two are heartless. Taking someone's sadness and further laugh at them is so low. The Radio station should be penalized by the government, establish a fund for their wrong doing!

I think that nurse had some serious issues and the prank pushed her over. The prank is nothing new since Mark

Wow, you know you can't predict soeone's suicide but damn, look at their history? How disgusting. What a couple of low human beings. They were giving plenty of chances to stop their nasty pranks after all that and still didn't and look what happened? They deserve the backlash. Heartless people.

Why not just lynch these folks, if we're going to look at them and report on them with a lynch mob mentality?

Look, what they did was probably illegal (trying to obtain medical info using false information) in their country. And it was a horrible tragedy. But that is no excuse to:

1, Show a picture of these two DJs when you are reporting about their radio station and stunts that have been exclusively pulled by *other DJs*. That's terribly inflammatory right now, and just plain bad reporting.

2, Gang slam these folks in absence of the facts. I have yet to hear why this woman killed herself, what was happening in her life other than this prank, and how she actually died.

Won't you all feel like dufi (dufusses, whatever) if it turns out that this nurse killed herself for some completely different reason, because she has a life that doesn't quite fit inside your poorly investigated info clips?

3, Was she fired from the hospital before she killed herself? We don't know. Given that this woman was so afraid of the repercussions, it sounds like this hospital deserves some scrutiny. But it's much easier just to look on the Internet for dirt on a radio station.

Very poor and inflammatory reporting on this one. Is Harvey starting to become the Church Lady? These DJs messed up, but there's something far more wrong than the joke when someone kills themselves over a dumb stunt like this. But I don't know whether we'll ever hear about that over all this finger-pointing yammering.

Unfortunately that is what shock jock radio is all about. I am certainly not defending what they did but I'm also sure they aren't lying about being shocked that their call went through. You can't have a prank without a victim and they knew that. I just don't know what to think.

People are jumping to blame the DJ's without knowing all the Facts...

Wrong Harvey! You cannot argue that they desired for the nurse to commit suicide, the only reasonable thing that could be ascertained from that whole situation was that they desire to seek information about Kate Middleton. I'll admit the prank history has a history of blowing up in their face but you can't reasonably foresee OR argue that suicide was the intent behind this prank call.

Even though the stunt was really dumb, I don't believe anyone could for see what would happen. It's tragic for everyone involved!

Doesn't the Hospital bear some of the blame? A prank call to a bank won't reveal someone's account balance, without verifying the authenticity of the caller. Shouldn't the Hospital have passwords for the Royal Family, to avoid situations like this. There is a voracious media out there, especially in England!

Yes the past stunts are pretty low but they are not really any lower than TMZ trying to use them to change the facts of the current situation. The dj's did not target this women and they are not responsible for her not doing her job according to hospital policy. They are not responsible for any fallout or embarrassment brought upon this nurse caused by her own actions. Nor are they responsible for her emotional issues that she clearly had prior to this incident. People do not kill themselves because of one bad day at work. She most likely was unhappy before this happened.

If the prank was approved by the head honchos to be played then they should not hold anyone responsible but themselves. The prank was in bad taste to begin with but none of the things that followed would have happened if they had just not aired it. Since it appears they did not do it live it was not going to be an issue to not play the recording.
To be honest with this stations history it really should just be shut down anyway. That would solve all the issues. These two people seem pretty devastated so it is doubtful they would have returned to this job even if the station had not cancelled the show.
