Instagram is in full damage control mode ... with company's co-founder firing off an emergency statement SWEARING the company has no plans to sell its user's photos.

The statement is a desperate attempt to quell concerns after the company released a new terms of service agreement to users yesterday which says "a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you."

After several famous and non-famous users vowed to stop using Instagram, co-founder Kevin Systrom released a statement saying, "It is our mistake that this language is confusing. To be clear: it is not our intention to sell your photos."

Systrom continues, "[The new terms of service] was interpreted by many that we were going to sell your photos to others without any compensation. This is not true."

He adds, "Instagram users own their content and Instagram does not claim any ownership rights over your photos. Nothing about this has changed. We respect that there are creative artists and hobbyists alike that pour their heart into creating beautiful photos, and we respect that your photos are your photos. Period."

"I always want you to feel comfortable sharing your photos on Instagram and we will always work hard to foster and respect our community and go out of our way to support its rights."

Systrom says more updates will be coming soon.

Of course they are backtracking now that a bunch of celebrities have announced they are leaving on Twitter. Too late, you already created a mess when you broke the connection between Twitter and Instagram since you can no longer open Instagram photos in Twitter. There are many more pic services out there yfrog, twitpic, lockerz, etc.... that are a much better service and still useable on Twitter.

They _say_ it is not their intention to sell users' photos, but if that's the case, why do they reserve the right to do just that?

Too late. Celebrities are angry. You can't anger celebrities without expecting some sort of carnage. Now that celebrities are angy at Instagram, everyone has to be angry at Instagram. Celebrities are like the new pope.

Wow ...

Isn't it enough for these sites to have the heavy traffic of it's users, without stealing photos and other personal info?

The New Terms and conditions haven't changed liars! - "a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you."

So was the "..without compensation.." Comment mean that they will sell you're photos and give you some form compensation. We just won't steal them, we will give 5% of the proceeds. Sounds like someone is trying to maneuver around what's really happening. I am not believing this statement at all!

Is not true, but is precisely what the terms says. Plus, he says is not his intention, not that he's not going to sell. HOT MESS
