'Wheel Of Fortune' Contestant

I'll Solve the Puzzle ...

I GOT SCREWED!

12/21/2012 10:05 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

1221_wheel_of_fortune_articleIt's time to play ...  "WHEEL OF FORTUNE"!!!!  Everybody ready? Great, the category is "Living Things"... now guess this phrase:

SE _EN  S_ _ NS    _ -S_ _ MM _ NG

Pretty easy right? Not if you were a contestant named Renee on Wednesday night's show -- who correctly solved the puzzle, but mispronounced "Seven Swans a-Swimming" ... as "Swimmin."

Turns out, no "g" ... meant no cash (which in Renee's case was thousands) -- because even though the letter was clearly on the board, Pat Sajak and the "Wheel" honchos quickly rejected the answer and moved on to the next player.

Not surprisingly, when the next contestant went to solve the game, she made sure to say "Swimming"
-- HARD G.

But ya gotta check out the tape, because during the EPIC rejection of an obviously correct answer ... Renee managed to grin and bear it, despite getting ROBBED ...

With a capital "R."

That is too bad..I think it just had to do with the dialect of what part of the country she came from.:(((((((((((((
She handled that loss very well,though.....

There was a black lady on last week that it took her three times to get it right and they gave her the prize... They are very unfair in how they determine if you got it right..I mention her race because I don't remember her name.. If you watch it every night you will know what I mean...

I've heard black people totally solve the puzzle incorrectly by the way they speak and Pat always says "YES" "CONGRATULATIONS". They are so afraid of contestants pulling the race card. I hope this woman sues but she is white so I'm sure she'll get nothing!

It's Dave

I saw the episode (like most people I watch Wheel and Jeopardy nightly during dinner) and she didn't get screwed.

If she had had a strong southern accent and thus using her regional dialect pronounced swimming as swimmin' then a case could be made. But she didn't have an accent at all and therefore regional differences in dialect were not in play here.

You didn't correctly solve the puzzle. Get over it.

The contestant answered incorrectly IF and ONLY IF you buy the notion that there is only one "correct" pronunciation of English, and that's false. People from Boston sound different than people from Texas, and neither is right or wrong; they're just different. If you really believe there is only one "correct" accent, which one do you nominate? Even the Queen's English (British Received Pronunciation) has changed over time; 200 years ago, every educated person "knew" that Wales and whales were not pronounced the same, and 100 years ago they knew the same about horse and hoarse. Today, most but not all accents merge them. Many New Englanders still recognize a difference in pronunciation between Mary, merry, and marry; Midwesterners typically don't. Which one is "correct"?

THROUGHOUT OUR COUNTRY, DIALECTS VARY. I am so sorry for the contestant. Her answer was how she enunciates from the region she is from. Perhaps the producers will consider giving her another chance. Hope so!!!
