'Wheel Of Fortune' Contestant

I'll Solve the Puzzle ...

I GOT SCREWED!

12/21/2012 10:05 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

1221_wheel_of_fortune_articleIt's time to play ...  "WHEEL OF FORTUNE"!!!!  Everybody ready? Great, the category is "Living Things"... now guess this phrase:

SE _EN  S_ _ NS    _ -S_ _ MM _ NG

Pretty easy right? Not if you were a contestant named Renee on Wednesday night's show -- who correctly solved the puzzle, but mispronounced "Seven Swans a-Swimming" ... as "Swimmin."

Turns out, no "g" ... meant no cash (which in Renee's case was thousands) -- because even though the letter was clearly on the board, Pat Sajak and the "Wheel" honchos quickly rejected the answer and moved on to the next player.

Not surprisingly, when the next contestant went to solve the game, she made sure to say "Swimming"
-- HARD G.

But ya gotta check out the tape, because during the EPIC rejection of an obviously correct answer ... Renee managed to grin and bear it, despite getting ROBBED ...

With a capital "R."

Finally a story that all of the smug self righteous spelling and grammar Nazis can feel oh-so-good about. Not that it makes them any less the socially awkward jerk, but at least language is actually the topic for once.

This woman was robbed. You have to take into account common pronunciations of words and it is not uncommon for people who are from certain regions of the US to exclude the g from the end of words. It's like saying someone with a jersey accent shouldn't be able to play WoF.

It's been done before with contestants with accents not getting the puzzle pronounced correctly and thus not winning.

Some people are trying to make it sound like people from the south are incapable of pronouncing the letter "g" they're not.

kinda like if she said seven ongs a-swimming.. it's incorrect because, you see, they need the right answer not the wrong one.

Unless Wheel of Fortune has it written in the contestants rules that pronunciation is to be precise, then the lady cannot sue. Is it discrimination for people with southern accents, Boston accents, Fargo, North Dakota accents or foreign accents....the answer would be yes.

Rules state that they will not accept answers with a vernacular pronunciation. Even people with the heaviest accents can enunciate past their native accents. Its a tough break but proper pronunciation is written into the rules.

I've seen African Americans say bofe instead of both and wiff instead of with. Technically they should be buzzed incorrect too.
