'Justified' Producers

Accused of Ripping Off

Western Artist

EXCLUSIVE

"Justified" producers are under fire from an artist who claims they ripped off one of his paintings for their promotional art ... and now, he's demanding they ditch the ads -- OR ELSE.

Attorney Keith Davidson fired off a cease and desist letter on behalf of artist Gabe Leonard ... accusing FX Networks -- which produces the hit show -- of copying his original piece "Double Fist" in its ads for the new season.

The letter cites several similarities -- rugged U.S. Marshals, pistols drawn, hats tipped, color schemes -- and concludes its a clear case of copyright infringement.

'Justified' art ... rip-off?

  • Yes
  • No
FYI -- "Double Fist" had been posted on Leonard's website 3 year prior to the unveiling of FX's promotional art.

FX says "no comment"-- but we gotta ask ...

Really? Somebody holding two guns out is that original that no one can do it now? I think every shoot em up movie has a scene like that. Thomas Jane as Punisher in the building with the money launderers springs to mind.

He is certainly not doing this for the notoriety, it is clearly an infringement. Gabe is represented by 80 galleries around the world, has sold thousands of pieces, and has an impressive and growing list of notable celebrities who collect his work.

FX ripped off Gabe's Bass Reeves painting for their new TV series " Justified " without any contact , notification , permission , credit and / or compensation . Of course they don't wanna pay : they have tons of money yet they are not only greedy but stingy ! It is very unfortunate people like that love to steal for free and do so all the time and get away with it . Not right !!! And the Artists get a bad rap for defending their own work ?? Makes no sense . I fully understand and support Gabe !

I'd bet a lot of artists have thought about doing something like that - a guy coming toward you with both barrels pointed your way.

Look at the positioning of the elbows, forearms and even the individual fingers grasping the guns. At the very least, it was "inspired" by the original. But if I was to judge personally, I'd say it was a blatant rip off, cause if you were familiar with the original and then happened to see this, you'd probably come to the same conclusion; it would immediately strike you as copy or an interpretation of the original.
