'Whale Wars' Star Sued

You Sank My Boat

... and Blamed the Japanese

1/8/2013 10:02 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

The star of the reality show "Whale Wars" LIED about the fate of the show's most famous ship ... falsely telling the media it sank due to a crash with Japanese whalers, when in fact he secretly SABOTAGED the boat himself for publicity ... this according to a new lawsuit.

Paul Watson (above) --  founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society -- has been sued by Ady Gil ... who claims he owned the famous Ady Gil ship featured on "Whale Wars." Gil claims he let Watson's organization use his boat, so long as they took care of it.

In his suit, filed yesterday in L.A. County Superior Court, Gil says his vessel was rammed by a Japanese whaling ship in 2010 ... and suffered damage to the nose ... but the damage was repairable.

According to Gil, Watson saw the collision as an opportunity to spin the incident into a major publicity and money maker for his organization ... so instead of towing the boat to port for repairs, he secretly gave an order to sink the ship "under the cover of darkness" ... and blamed the Japanese.

Gil claims Watson knew that blaming the whalers for the destruction of his ship would garner sympathy for his cause and spark outrage against the whalers ... inspiring more people to donate to his anti-whaling organization.

Gil is now demanding more than $5 MILLION in damages ... claiming Watson failed in his promise to do everything possible to keep the Ady Gil from sinking.

FYI -- Watson resigned from his position as the President of the Sea Shepherd society yesterday in the wake of other legal issues facing the organization.

So far, no comment from either Watson or the Society.

To Paul and his crew members writing comments on TMZ:
You and yours tried to lie about being shot, having no problem slandering an innocent man leaving the world to think he was an attempted murderer, along with it smearing the reputation of all Japanese as people who would randomly murder people, and you would have had the innocent man brought up on charges for attempted murder if the *scripted* bullsh-t fake shooting wouldn't have been so fake and obvious to viewers.
There's a reason people don't respect you ;)

Why does everyone wait years before they file a suit? I stand behind Paul Watson. I'll change my mind if and when a video tape or recording surfaces. And didn't Bob Barker own the Ady Gil? He paid for it. I'm sad Paul resigned. I await the nasty comments I'm going to get.

This show is crazy and good to watch after you had a couple of bowls lol! Then you realize Sea Shepard is just a bunch of hippies that like to smoke weed in the cold :)

Maybe everyone should research a little more than what the always truthful Interweb tells them. As a person who has donated money to Sea Shepherd, I stand by their cause and regardless of how TMZ or other news' outlets twist the story to make controversy, they are doing what's right by the necessary means.

I quit watching Whale Wars because Paul Watson was such a douche bag. No surprise he did something so underhanded to someone that helped him.

I knew this guy was a piece of work when he said he got shot by a Japanese crew member and supposedly his Captains badge stopped the bullet. Couldn't watch after that.

He did not order for the ship to be sunk secretly . The decision was filmed and on the show Whale Wars. Bethune was the Captain of the Ady Gil, he took it out to the Southern Ocean with his crew and met the Sea Shepherds out there. The Ady Gil was dead in the water and waiting to be fueled, a much smaller ship than the whaling vessel which annihilated it, also the Ady Gil had the right of way. ( boat traffic right of way)

So we are being sued once again and this time by the shameless Ady Gil. He wants Sea Shepherd to fork over $5 million dollars.

Gilda Radner once remarked that, “It’s always something and if it’s not something, it’s something else.”

And here we are fighting the Japanese whalers upon the sea and in the courts, fighting injunctions and threats of armed Japanese Coast Guards, fighting the Bluefin tuna poachers, the dolphin killers in Taiji, the sharkfinners in the South Pacific and Hong Kong and I myself fighting charges brought against me by Pete Bethune’s collaboration with the Japanese that has led to me being red listed with Interpol.

We are trying to reform CITES, trying to police poaching in the Galapagos, trying to stop a gas hub facility in Western Australia that threatens Humpback whales, trying to shut down the Namibian seal slaughter and today while we are struggling through heavy seas on our way to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary I get a message saying that Ady Gil is suing us for $5 million dollars claiming we intentionally sank his vessel Ady Gil for publicity.

Of course he leaked this suit to TMZ before we knew about it and TMZ then stated we had no comment when they had not even contacted us.

Not that we are worried. It is simply a vindictive and frivolous attempt at a lawsuit. The entire incident of the loss of the Ady Gil was do***ented on film. Pete Bethune shut his boat down in front of an oncoming harpoon vessel and the Ady Gil was cut in two. It was not salvageable although the crew of the Bob Barker did try. They towed it for hours breaking one tow line after another because of the weight of sea water inside. It was like towing a huge bucket through the sea. The engine room was full of seawater, Finally the Captain on the Bob Barker called me and asked what should we do. I was two hundred miles away on the Steve Irwin. I replied that it was Pete Bethune’s boat so it was Pete’s decision. I spoke to Bethune and he said that the boat could not be salvaged. I even asked him if he thought he could salvage the engines. He said that they were essentially destroyed. He said we should let it go and to prevent it becoming a navigational hazard, he went over himself to sink the hulk with his own crew, not my crew. The hull remained buoyant however and it was left floating after Sea Shepherd contacted the Australian Maritime Safety authorities to inform them that the hull had to be abandoned. Bethune made his decision on camera so he cannot deny it.

Ady Gils’ claim that I ordered the boat to be sunk is ludicrous. It was his boat and Bethune was his captain. I had no authority to order the sinking of his boat.

Ady Gils’ claim that the boat was only slightly damaged is delusional. The vessel was literally cut in half.

The vessel was lost through negligence on the part of Bethune and because of the deliberate ramming of the vessel by the Shonan Maru no. 2. This was the conclusion of the investigation by New Zealand Search and Rescue although the captain of the Shonan Maru No. 2 refused to be questioned and the Japanese never cooperated with the investigation.

Yet based on the plea deal made by Bethune with the Japanese, they want me extradited to Japan for (according to Bethune’s allegations) ordering him to trespass on the Shonan Maru No 2 when I am recorded on film actually advising him to not board the vessel.

Ady Gil claims that he donated one million dollars to Sea Shepherd to purchase the Ady Gil. He did not do so. Sea Shepherd returned his check because we could not legally meet the conditions of his donation. He then bought the vessel himself from Pete Bethune. The ship was crewed by Bethune’s own crew. There was only one Sea Shepherd representative on the crew. The crew followed Bethune’s orders not mine and Bethune followed Ady Gil’s orders, not mine.

All this lawsuit is going to do is to waste time and money that could otherwise be used to further our campaigns.

But like every other obstacle thrown into our path be it from the whalers, sealers, shark finners or fish poachers, or in this case Ady Gil, we will confront the problem and deal with it accordingly.

But what is curious is that Ady Gil waited for three years until we were in the toughest situation we have ever been in, when were struggling to make our way through heavy seas in the face of fierce Japanese opposition to spring this ridiculous lawsuit on us.

Did he think it was a good tactic to kick us when we were down in the mud brawling with the Japanese? Is he that desperate to get his name in the news?

When Sea Shepherd saves the oceans and ultimately YOU, they will not be smug about it. Sad the whale haters will benefit from a clean and healthy ocean-Earth, and they surely won't deserve it. But in history, it has always been the courageous few who have vision for the rest of the mucky mucks occupied with their mundane, irrelevent to anything worthwhile, lives.

The article failed to mention that the Ady Gil was an important, historical ship that broke the global cir***navigation record in 2008, making the trip in just 61 days.
