Cam Newton

Pulls a Dangerfield ...

Heads Back to School

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton knows ... he's gotta have a backup plan if the whole NFL thing doesn't work out ... so he's heading back to college.

Newton -- who blew off school to become the #1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft -- has re-enrolled at Auburn University for the spring semester to continue working on his sociology degree.

FYI -- Newton signed a 4-year, $22 million contract with the Panthers when he first left Auburn ... and has undoubtedly racked up millions more through various endorsement deals.

Still, it's clear Newton knows you can't put a price on a good education ... and made the decision to go back.

A rep for the school told the Associated Press Cam won't be talking to the media about his decision because he just "wants to focus on school and be a normal student."

A normal student ... who can buy and sell the entire teaching staff.

This is very surprising. I would have figured that Auburn would have throw in a degree as part of the deal when they payed him to be quarterback. Man did he get ripped off.

If I had 22+ million dollars, I wouldn't be concerned about working ever again. With responsible spending and sound investments, that money could easily last you the rest of your life with plenty to leave behind for loved ones.

For once a football player is on TMZ for doing something good and you people want to hate! He is doing something smart by having a back up plan for his future. It comes down to some of you are never happy, if the kid was accused of a crime you would be talking s*it and if he does good you talk s*it! I say good choice Cam, and screw the haters because you're making more money then most of them! BTW I'm not a Panthers fan!

Half of these people on the comments are such a-holes, I applaud Cam for going back to school to get a education.

I think this is a good thing. I do not know why people report this as a bad thing. Not everyone can play professional sports so if you are going to be a role model it is good to show people that school is important. Good for you Cam.

People's reaction to this is why our society is as screwed up as it is. I read Sociology degree and thought great he plans on working with the community and making a difference. We NEED more social workers. FYI - many students who just have a business degree or a marketing degree are unemployed because they don't have specializations and the market is saturated with those general degrees. We need to focus on having our kids get educated in the industries that are hiring NOW and in the future. What we need are more math, science, technology, & engineering degrees. There are also many manufacturing jobs that don't require degrees that need to be filled but who's telling their kids that trade schools are an option?!?! Why aren't we encouraging our kids to travel and work outside of the country? We have to stop isolating ourselves in a bubble. There are many opportunities for us in other countries. There are so many delusional undergrads expecting 6 figs after graduation and I blame parents for not teaching basic finances to kids. Start teachng them about living within your means. Success should not = money because Lord knows if that was the case every rich person would be happy and we see this is not the case daily.

How about 90% of you haters go back and get (at least) your high school diploma. Then you have the right to comment on this post.

Good for him. Whatever he does after football is up to him. If he wants to open day care centers and help disadvantaged children then more power to him. It's funny to read all the ignorant comments from the loser trolls on this post. Talking bad about a man who is already a multi-millionaire with endorsement deals, that goes back to school to get his degree. A starting quarterback in the NFL. All the negativity must be from jealous losers with no life.
