What do you mean by "internet dating"? I met my fiance on one of the big dating sites and tons of marriages have come out of those sites as well. Is that what you mean? Or are you talking about meeting through Facebook, Twitter, Chat Room, etc. and conducting most of the relationship online? Are you even aware of the difference TMZ?

Well, I met my husband online 15 years ago... we've married for 13. I would never had met him if it weren't for that online forum discussing our common interest of jewelry metalsmithing. By the time we "met" in person, we were pretty much engaged. We aren't crazy who weird. I totally beelive that this guy could have been duped. Do I know it? No... but I can see how it is possible... I was completely in love with my husband before I ever touched him. It's not as unusual as people might think. It's been happening for centuries ..you know with people writing letters.... those paper things that people send with stamps.

He got played for a fool and was embarrassed to tell the truth. I had something similar happen to me and the only people who know the details are the people who were close to me at the time. Leave the poor guy alone.

I do think this guy got duped. I'm sorry to say I know two other people who fell in love on line, one of them was one of those African schemes to send money. Next story will come and this will be yesterday's news.

Ok, I am shocked that 65% of the voters think online dating is f**** up. Seriously? What Manti fell for is incredibly dumb but meeting someone online thru match.com or eharmormy or even facebook is not messed up. You eventually go on a date after a month or so.

I can only think of one reason a man would have a "pretend" girlfriend for 3 years. In your "gotta ask" poll--I think that one should be "he'll find a man".

Uh oh i am screwed

Sadly this happens more often than people think. My last job was as an internet moderator for message boards for several large companies (huge publishing ones and the happiest place on earth)

Years ago i became friends with a woman on line through one of those sites (parenting one) she claimed that she had breast cancer. We talked every day on line through these boards, then one day her "husband" got on and said she had died. Even my employer fell for it, and made a donation in her name (biggest publisher in the country) I was devistated, cried for days over the loss of my "friend" then some other members of that board emailed me the inconsistancies in her story.

I did research and found no death records, contacted the funeral home, no such person had died. While i was happy there were not two kids out there who lost a mom, i felt like an idiot.

While doing that job i also witnessed several instances of people killing off their "kids" and things like that. There are some sick people out there, but there are also some good ones.

I know several couples who met through dating sites and are happily married so just because crap like this happens doesn't mean it can't work, it just means people need to careful, and do research/background checks on people before getting too involved.

He's probably gay and in the closet. Very rare a college athlete frontline or bench would be committed in online, 3 year relationship.
