Dustin Hoffman

TMZ Caused 'Luck' Cancellation

1/31/2013 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

0131-dustin-hoffman-luck-tmzDustin Hoffman says the TMZ reports surrounding the deaths of 3 horses on the set of "Luck" last year are to blame for his show getting canceled ... claiming our facts were wrong.

Dustin just gave an interview to FoxNews.com, saying the "real" reason the show was canceled was due to a collaboration between PETA and TMZ ... and NOT because the public was upset that THREE horses died during production.

Hoffman said, "It’s completely distorted. Anyone who raises horses know they break their legs. The accusations they made were distorted."

He also directs people to the horse racing website Paulick Report for the "real reason the show was canceled."

Truth is, the TMZ stories are in sync with what was reported on the Paulick Report.

Here are the facts that we published on TMZ.com:

-- THREE horses died during the production of the show
(Confirmed by Paulick Report)

-- Horse #3 was euthanized on the set ... and production continued a few hours later
(Euthanasia confirmed by Paulick Report)

-- HBO acknowledged the deaths ... and released a statement saying “accidents unfortunately happen."

And the kicker ... the ratings for "Luck" weren't that great to begin with ... and there were MULTIPLE reports that HBO used the horse deaths as an excuse to cancel the show without having to admit failure.
(You can also read about that on the Paulick Report)

The Jersey Shore generation couldnt handle the show that took two brain cells to put together. No wonder the muppets around here think it "sucked".

Unfortunately horses break legs... Um, of course they do when you do stupid **** with them! I've had horses all my life, my friends all have horses, and never once have I heard of any of them breaking a leg. We have horses falling in ditches or sinkholes every once in a while and they don't even break legs! Disgusting trying to deny responsibility.

TMZ and HBO are both Time Warner companies. If anything HBO uses TMZ to help their financial interests. HBO fully acknowledged the incidents and put a stop to production because HBO is an incredibly decent and progressive network, who would probably like to steer away from controversy and the guilt of a freak accident of animals becoming injured.

TMZ is the web equivalent of the National Enquirer. I take NOTHING they print as the truth, and never read this rag. Slow gossip day, kids? No photos of dead celebrities OD'ed on drugs? Go back to your playpen, kiddies. There's nothing to report here. I loved "Luck". Dustin Hoffman is voicing his opinion. Whatever happened on the set of "Luck" has already been reported by legitimate news organizations. So what if the show had low ratings? HBO takes a lot of chances with shows that are not mainstream.

Own it, TMZ. Without the hysteria you helped gin up, the show would have gone on. Don't be weenies. Whether you were right or wrong matters less than that you are honest about it, and about who you are.

I think it should win the Plurimum Oxymoronica award.

Interesting that you claim they would have cancelled the show anyway due to poor ratings, yet they were in the process of filming the second season.....

Pretty weak blame deflection.

Why film the second season if they were going to cancel due to bad ratings?

I thought the show was great, and getting better, and despite being an animal lover, I can understand that these things happen and there are much worse things being done to horses than what occurred on the set of that show.

TMZ should acknowledge at least some responsibility in its cancellation, not hide behind a soft "The ratings weren't that good anyway!" excuse.

If the ratings were a factor they wouldn't have been shooting a second season. Own up, Harv. Pretty weak.
