Forest Whitaker

Blasts NYC Deli

I Was Falsely Accused of Stealing

2/16/2013 1:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0215-forest-whitaker-milano-gettyForest Whitaker is furious with a NYC deli ... telling TMZ he was wrongly accused of shoplifting Friday morning ... and even FRISKED IN PUBLIC in a humiliating violation of his rights.

Whitaker -- an Academy Award-winning MILLIONAIRE -- says he was on his way out of the Milano Market on the Upper West Side Friday when he was stopped by a deli employee and accused of swiping an item from the shelf.

An eyewitness tells TMZ ... the employee proceeded to frisk Whitaker in plain view ... treating him as if he were a common criminal.

Shocker, the employee's pat down yielded zilch ... and Forest left the establishment baffled and angry.

Whitaker's rep tells TMZ, "This was an upsetting incident given the fact that Forest did nothing more than walk into the deli. What is most unfortunate about this situation is the inappropriate way store employees are treating patrons of their establishment.

Frisking individuals without proof/evidence is a violation of rights."

The rep adds, "Forest did not call the authorities at the request of the worker who was in fear of losing his employment. Forest asked that, in the future, the store change their behavior and treat the public in a fair and just manner.”

We called Milano Market for comment -- but no one wanted to talk.

shouldve called the police before he was frisked to use them as a witness, then filed a claim against the deli when they found nothing

Americans are always crying about their rights. now stores will have to post signs stating that once you enter our establishment, you are agreeing to be frisked if we suspect you shoplifted and you suspend your right to sue us.

I checked this shop out on Yelp. I noticed that alot of TMZ readers rated it from their locales all over the USA, based upon the Forrest Whitaker incident. That is very dishonest. They never set foot in the store, yet made up stories how they were followed and abused. You are running an honest business into the ground over gossip. Even so, it still had four stars.

From what I read from the reviews before this story broke, the food is excellent and a little expenseive. The help there tend to be rude, and as I suspected, are Hispanic. They say bad things about the customers in Spanish when they ask for help and refuse to answer questions.

This whole scenario is quite typical for the area. Some kindly Italian hires the Hispanics to work for him to give them a break, and they slowly run down the business that was once thriving so that they can drive the owner out and take it over.

I think Forrest maybe should find out who the owner is and speak with him. It is not a police incident but it might well be a rudeness inicdent. The clerks there tell customers that the managemetn is absent if they ask to speak with them.

I am sick of this going on all over. You can't get a decent slice of pizza because all of the pizzerias have been taken over by Hispanics. One place even gave me whole wheat pizza and the crust was cornmeal, so it just stuck in a clump in the box.

These people don't appreciate Italian culture or American society. I experience their rudeness constantly as well.
