An award-winning TV and film director was killed in a gruesome shark attack off the coast of New Zealand today ... as authorities grabbed guns and opened fire on the animals.

46-year-old Adam Strange -- who's directed a whole bunch of international commercials for companies like Pepsi and Firestone -- was swimming at a popular NZ beach when a Great White pulled him underwater. According to local reports, at least 3 other sharks were drawn to the attack.

Local police jumped in a small boat and raced over to the scene ... joined by a helicopter. The cops fired at least 20 shots at the sharks, but it was too late.

One shark was reportedly killed in the gunfire ... and its body -- measuring 14-feet long -- washed up on shore a short time later.

As for Strange -- authorities were able to recover his body after the attack.

Strange didn't just direct commercials -- he also won Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival in 2009. He leaves behind a wife and small child.

Makes me wonder what type of guns and/or bullets were used bc I have always been under the impression that bullets will not travel thru water at a fast enough trajectory to deliver a kill shot? Maybe the shark was at the surface or very close to the surface for it to actually penetrate thru....Anyways a very sad story and may he RIP. But also agree with others commenting that it was very stupid to swim that far out into known shark infested waters. The shark(s) was only doing what sharks do. They gotta eat too and very likely confused the man as a seal. Still very very sad. May God bless his family and friends with peace and help them through this very difficult time.

I'm sorry for his loss. I am sorry to his family and friends. Wild animals are wild. We invade their territory when we do things like this. They will attack when they feel threatened.

Why are they shooting at the Great Whites with machine guns no less? The Great Whites are where they are supposed to be. If they get up and walk on land then feel free to shoot them.

I am truly man this man died, but he did take a chance knowing what the risk were shooting in an area that is shark infested..the shark that was killed was also a victim, it was in it's natural habitat.

BTW it is not a animal. It's the world's largest known extant macropredatory fish

FYI..the area is not well known for sharks at all, very unusual for them to be so close to shore. The sharks were shot at to recover the body not for the fun of it. It is unknown if they were hurt and no, it did not wash up on the beach.

Tragic, but I do not see how "shooting" at and killing great whites is going to "teach" them to not bite humans... ITS AN ANIMAL THAT IS DRIVEN BY INSTINCTS AND HAS NO ARMS TO "CHECK" IF ITS A HUMAN OR NOT... not to mention we are in its territory....its a risk we take when we go to the beach and swim with the "big fishes"

It's animal cruelty to kill the shark for being a shark... if the idiot wants to jump into their water and mess with them, then he deserves the consequences....
