Navajo Nation

'Mike & Molly' Joke

IS RACIST!!!

3/3/2013 6:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

030113_mikeandmindy_launchThe Navajo Nation is LIVID after a joke aired on "Mike & Molly" ... calling Native Americans a bunch of drunks ... and now the group is demanding an apology from CBS.

In case you missed it, Mike's mother on the show -- an Archie Bunker type -- says, "You ever been to Arizona? It's just furnace full of drunk Indians."

The joke isn't sitting well in the Native American community. A rep for the Navajo Nation tells TMZ,  "For a show like this displaying us in a negative light is just unacceptable, they are taking a shot at the entire state of Arizona and its indigenous people."

The rep says, "An apology would be the right thing to do, but some damage done can't be fixed in an apology."

Calls to CBS weren't returned.

I didn't think anybody actually watched that show to make a determination.

Just so you know.... your "Crying Indian" was not Native American, but rather an actor who often played Native Americans under the name 'Iron Eyes Cody'. He was born Espera Oscar de Corti in Louisiana and was of Italian descent. It would have been nice had the 'Keep America Beautiful' campaign chosen an actual Native American, but I have to admit Cody did an admirable job representing and portraying Native Americans.

If it was an "Archie Bunker" type character that said that then the Native Group needs to take a step back and think about this. The goal of "Archie Bunker" was to show how foolish bigotry really is. The Mike and Molly character was helping to show how foolish bigotry is. They were doing you a service!

Instead of getting so upset about a JOKE prove that the joke is wrong. Sadly many Indians are raging alcholics. Its a fact.

Okay, usually I'm not politically correct but I think that's taking things too far. Indian giving jokes are bad but they don't bother me too much. I think it's just a respect thing. But this is very rude and offensive. They're not all drunks. Stop stereotyping. They're still fking suffering SO much but the media NEVER addresses it and so much of it is out of their hands. They have no hope it seems and yet we mock them instead of helping them.

It is NOT racist. In nursing school we are taught all the cultural differences. Native Americans lack the enzyme to break down alcohol (causing them to get drunker easier) and are also prone to alcoholism. Therefore the joke is actually based on FACTS. Each culture has its own illnesses and problems, pointing them out, does not make you a racist. Dont believe me, pick up a book and read.

As someone from Phoenix, I must say that no truer words have ever been spoken on television. This statement wasn't meant to hate on Indians. Just Arizona. And this sure is the pot calling the kettle racist. Considering my only times on the nearby Indian reservations I have been attacked by people AND their dogs for being white. Indians are by far THE most racist ethnicity of people I've met.

Feeding an already large stereotype. How about taking a look into the effects of colonialization, which has created a lot of problems for Native Americans. Very insensitive, and uninformed.
