Lauryn Hill

I Didn't Pay and Didn't Play

'Cause of Terrifying Threats

4/15/2013 5:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0412_lauryn_hill_01Lauryn Hill claims she stiffed Uncle Sam on a massive tax bill for the same reason she fell off the map after the '90s -- scary threats to her and her family.

Lauryn just filed legal docs asking for mercy before her sentencing later this month, claiming there was a good reason she failed to file tax returns for 2005, '06 and '07 ... when she earned a total of more than $1.8 million. She already pled guilty and faces several years in prison.

According to docs ... Lauryn stopped paying taxes "when she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family."

She's not specific about the threats -- but it's a new explanation for her mysterious disappearance from the music scene after her rise to fame in the '90s.

Lauryn previously claimed she went underground to get back in touch with her musical roots.

Lauryn's asking the court to consider a bunch of other factors before her sentencing -- including her claim that she can pay off the debt much faster if she's not behind bars.

Lauryn is begging for probation.   A judge will be merciful -- or not -- on April 22.

This is federal court, not California's joke of a system. She's going to have to do better than these vague non-excuses that don't mesh with her earlier explanations.

What!

So people that have been diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder are exempt from filing their taxes?! I have this disorder and did my taxes all by myself on Saturday! Couldn't she hire an accountant to do the taxes for her? I say no mercy for her...

I don't buy the excuses, she didn't pay for the same reason everyone else who doesn't pay-they don't want to and think their above being caught and punished. I seriously doubt she'll do any jail time, but she should have at least owned up to it.

I have been following Lauryn closingly. Don't laugh her off. I think the threats she faced were very real. If you noticed her troubles started around the time she was forced back into working with the Fugees in 2005. She stated as much in a Essence magazine article. When she decided to walk away from that deal she changed drastically after that. Here is were it gets interesting. When she decided to do a few concerts on her own Wyclef and Pras did a media coordinated effort to call her crazy in the media. They were obsessed. Also, it became known that Wyclef and Pras were facing financial problems dated back to this the same time period. I think they were banking on her. Wyclef had a house foreclosed on along with tax problems, and Pras was confronted by a news reporter about studio debt he owed all do***ented.

Also, right before Jimmy Henchman was indicted Wyclef, Jimmy Henchman and Pras had put out press release stating that Lauryn would be performing in Haiti with the Fugees. Lauryn was pregnant and on tour and had not spoken to Wyclef and Pras in years. Lauryn's spokeperson finally released a statement saying this was not the case. It was very odd like they were trying to intimidate her. Also, during Wyclef's performance in Haiti in the dark of night the same night he claimed to have been shot, he called Lauryn out for not coming to Haiti (video on youtube). The next week Jimmy Henchman was indicted and Wyclef was named.

As the case of James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond continues to heat up, yesterday (May 23) in Brooklyn Federal Court a new piece of evidence was introduced to his file.

According to a Proffer Agreement from October of last year, Jimmy revealed to prosecutors he loaned Wyclef Jean 60,000 dollars in drug money.

While the Haitian-American artist did not have any knowledge of the origin of the funds, Rosemond supported Jean’s 2010 bid as Haitian president as well as helped organize a concert for President Michel Martelly last year. The Haitian government began keeping a close watch on the pair after several checks totaling to $80 thousand were sent to Rosemond from business properties of Jean’s.

So, do not blow Lauryn off as crazy. I very much believe she has faced some very real threats over the years. You only need to look at Wyclef for the answers. He is a dirty dog that started abusing this women when she was still a teen and has continued up until this day with his book.

She'll get house arrest and have to set up a payment plan for restitution. Her name will get her a lesser sentence...this happens all of the time. Us normal people would go directly to jail. If she truly had the ability to make money with her music, she would already be doing it. The best thing that she could do is pay off her debt before court.

It sounds like mental illness either caused her to imagine a threat, or a real threat caused the illness. Either way, she would have seen a doctor and/or a psychologist to help cope with the stress. There are a lot of mental health agencies out there that will have someone take over your finances while you recover, and do your taxes.

Even if she can provide do***entation from a doctor, how was she well enough to make that much money over three years? If she really was in hiding, perhaps the income was from investments, but wouldn’t that mean she could cash in and pay her taxes? Something isn’t adding up here.

I think the threats excuse is pretty weak. But I also think that the IRS knows that if she works, she can pay them off pretty quickly.

I believe the threats she is referring to are threats from the industry. If you watch her youtube video she sings a song about the illuminati, mind control and she warns artists to "get out." The song also reveals why she left the industry years ago.

As a black woman I think she needs to serve time just like Wesley, Ron, and anyone else who evaded their taxes. I pay taxes and I don't make nearly as much as her.
