Lou Ferrigno

Bruce Banner Was

Too Gay for Television

6/3/2013 7:33 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

060313_lou_ferrigno_launchDr. Bruce Banner became Dr. David Banner for the "Incredible Hulk" TV show back in the 1970s, and Lou Ferrigno says the name change came about because CBS thought the name Bruce was "gay-ish."

Our photog spotted Ferrigno at LAX this weekend and after hitting him up for some fitness tips, our photog asked him why the Hulk got the name change for the show. Ferrigno explained that back in 1977, CBS felt the name Bruce "was kinda gay-ish."

Clearly that's ridiculous ... if anything was gay about the show, it was a guy running around with jeans and no shirt on.

Lou Ferrigno is a good guy doing good things and has stayed out of the Hollywood fray for decades. If you were going to do a story involving him at least you could have some something worthwhile.

Since when is a guy running around with jeans and no shirt on gay? Oh, TMZ. But yes, it is silly to change a name because it "sounds gay".

Bruce Forsyth from uk's strictly Come dancing almost changed his name to Larry so he could sound ungay...sadly Larry Grayson, another 1970's stalwart like Harvey told him to piss off and change it back, phew.
Tis true.

Make all your page gay...just sayin.

Saw a cartoon in Penthouse magazine back in the 80s... it showed a bunch of cops outside of a gay bar. The caption said "We have the place surrounded, Bruce, so come out with your hands on your hips." So Lou is right about the 80s and the name Bruce.

That was kinda f'ed up what the chick with black hair said about doing the AIDS Walk with beds. I'm pretty easy going and that pissed me off.

Oh sure the name Bruce was too gay-ish, but not having the actor portray him having starred as a single father raising his son in his own (we all know the widower story was a coverup and Eddie's father was really gay) in "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (even the show's name screams gay). And prior to that Bixby had played a man who was living with another man who dressed in lamé who he had to pretend was his uncle in "My Favorite Martian".
