Aaron Hernandez

Placed In Medical Ward

For Safety

7/1/2013 11:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Aaron Hernandez
is NOT in the general population of jail ... because jail officials are concerned for his safety ... TMZ has learned.

We're told Hernandez -- who has been charged with first degree murder -- has been in the medical ward since his arrival last week.  We're told authorities are concerned because of the former Patriots star's celebrity status ... other inmates might try to harm him.

Sources say at the time of this post, jail officials were meeting to decide what to do with Hernandez -- whether to put him in the general population or a more segregated environment.

For now ... Hernandez is in the medical wing ... allowed out of his cell for 1 hour a day.

Still impossible to believe anyone could be this stupid and evil. An amazing career, fame, wealth, a beautiful new baby that he'll never watch grow up. And the baby will have to live with this stigma for life. Now he has to be protected because of his actions and because he's not so tough without his posse.

That is so disrespectful to the man he murdered and the man's family. He should have thought of that before. What is wrong with the system? No matter who you are or what you do for a living everybody should be treated the same. Throw him in the cell with Bubba.

He shouldn't get any special treatment. If he needs protection put him in the hole. Nobody will get him there.

All prisoners and jail inmates should be put in their cells, drugged, and left there until it's time to release, try, or execute them. Allowing them to beat up on each other just makes the toughest ones tougher and makes them all more of a threat when they get out. The best way to handle violent felons, once they are tried, is to execute them as quickly and humanely as possible. No lectures, no soul-saving, no rehabilitation, just get rid of them ASAP! If, in the mean time, any of them wish to kill themselves voluntarily, they should be allowed to do so after a short "cooling off" period. Obviously, we wouldn't want to encourage the few detainees that are innocent to take their own lives, but if they really want to, that should be their right. If the guilty want to kill themselves, go for it, it saves the cost of a trial.
