Randy Travis

Family and Friends 'Frantic'

About Singer's Condition

The people closest to Randy Travis are extremely worried about the singer's condition ... with sources telling TMZ his health had declined pretty rapidly in recent days after coming down with what he initially thought was a bad cold.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... just 3 weeks ago, 54-year-old Travis completed his court-ordered rehab stemming from a 2012 drunk driving arrest ... and was finally back on the road.

We're told ... once Travis began touring, he came down with what he thought was a cold ... but turned out to be pneumonia.

Our sources say Travis' health deteriorated quickly ... and Sunday he was airlifted to a hospital, where he was treated for complications stemming from viral cardiomyopathy.

One medical expert tells TMZ viral cardiomyopathy is not necessarily a death sentence ... and some patients can survive, depending on the level of permanent damage to the heart muscle.

Travis' camp hasn't released the particulars about his medical situation -- only to say he's in critical condition.

Still, we're told Randy's friends and family are "frantic."

His doctors probably initially suspected pneumonia when it was actually cardiomyopathy. The main symptom of both illnesses is fluid in the lungs, and cardiomyopathy is often misdiagnosed initially. That's what happened to someone in my family, and it took quite a while to get the right diagnosis.

This is a scary illness, but it's true that people CAN recover from it with little or no damage to the heart. New findings show that the heart muscle can regenerate to a certain degree. We also have new medicines that will help the heart get stronger (Coreg), and heart-assist pumps that can be implanted to help the heart pump while it recovers.

I wish his family all the best. There is reason to be cautiously optimistic, and I'm hoping for a full recovery for Randy.

No pitty for pampered millionaires that piss their life away with drugs and alcohol. Like ive always said you cant buy character. Character is what there is so little of these days. Get you head out of your ass Randy and join the human race. Stop being a selfish ass and think about someone else besides yourself.

54 years old, too young. I hope he recovers. Too much booze is bad news.

My dad would get double pneumonia a couple of times a year and spent weeks in the hospital at a time. Luckily it wasn't fatal but it weakened his lungs and heart. And he died at 53 of liver and lung cancer . I am sure that Randy will be fine, hopefully it won't weaken his heart and lungs.

Lesson to the little ones...you can't abuse your body like he has and expect for it to bounce back. His condition is related to his drinking and drug abuse. Sober up young....
