Amanda Bynes

8/1/2013 1:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Amanda Bynes
is doing remarkably better ... she's stabilized, not hearing voices and it's all because of a cocktail ... TMZ has learned.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... doctors at the psychiatric hospital where she's being held have given her a combination of meds -- referred to as a cocktail -- to control what appears to be schizophrenia.

Our sources say Amanda responded quickly and dramatically.  We're told in the last 3 days, Amanda has stopped talking to herself and stopped insulting people. To the contrary, we're told she's become downright polite, even saying "please" and "thank you."  She has shown no signs of violence.

The progress is all the more stunning because these cocktails are notoriously difficult to gauge -- getting the right combination of meds with the right doses is something of a crap shoot.  Our sources say the meds take 7 to 10 days to fully kick in, so they're not declaring victory yet, but they're optimistic.

But there's an ironic twist.  Amanda is scheduled to have a court hearing today ... where she's trying to get out of the psych hospital. The fact that she's doing better can actually help her case, but we're told doctors are confident the judge will not let her out for several reasons.  First, it's unclear if the meds will work long-term.  Also, it's highly uncertain she'll voluntarily take the drugs.

One more thing.  There are reports Amanda's parents may back off the conservatorship if she does better in the psych ward.  Our sources say that is "absolutely untrue."  Amanda's parents feel it's essential for her to get long-term care and supervision.

Still don't think it is Schizophrenia...I think she was in a Manic Phase of a Bipolar I Disorder. Or maybe Schizoaffective Disorder Bipolar Type. She just seems too socially aware to have schizophrenia.

I so wish her the best. However, those meds take a couple of weeks to kick in. I have someone very close to me with this same dz (I am with him everyday) and staying on their meds is also a hard thing for them to do because once the feel better, they think they don't need the meds. Again, I wish her nothing but the best. Now that she has a dx, that is half the battle. There is a long road ahead of her! God bless!

Being in a stable, safe environment without constant marijuana use probably doesn't hurt.

Uh oh i am screwed

I hope and pray it continues to work and that she keeps taking her meds.

She was such a bright, vibrant young actress and seeing her lately has been heart breaking.

I hope the judge assigns a conservitor (doesn't have to be her parents) to make sure she stays on track!

For some reason, it sounds like a lot of pharmaceutical reps are posting on this article.

Well I'm glad to hear she is doing better. I hope she stays on this path.

If she's actually been diagnosed with schizophrenia then she and her family are in it for the long haul. Glad she found a mixture of meds that work. Many ppl diagnosed with schizophrenia spend years finding drugs to improve all the symptoms. Good luck to her

Elizabeth Alan

I wish her a speedy recovery but it is still too soon to know for sure. She has not had time to see if any adverse side effects develop such as stomach, kidney or liver reactions and what medication adjustment might need to be made so that she is encouraged to continue with her meds; especially if the meds impair her driving or the routine she is accustomed to. Pills everyday begin to feel like a ball and chain as well.

Get well Soon, Amanda so you can get out and pose in Playboy (or Hustler) for us and earn back the million or so that you burned through when you were crazy. It's a win-win situation for everyone. Oh yeah, and don't forget that you need to show us the "beav". We don't want any more lame Lindsay Lohan type pictures, O.K..

Once again, the writer is so inexperienced in general that he/she describes a combination of drugs, "referred to as a ****tail," as though the writer is learning this phrase for the first time!
