87-year-old actor Dick Van Dyke narrowly averted disaster moments ago on an L.A. freeway -- when his Jaguar burst into flames -- but thankfully, he was pulled to safety in the nick of time.

The hero who rescued him is a guy named Jason Pennington, who tells TMZ, he was driving along the 101 when he saw a car full of smoke on the side of the road ... and an elderly man hunched over at the wheel.

Pennington tells us, he pulled up and ran over to discover Dick Van Dyke struggling inside.

Pennington says he opened the driver door and pulled the actor out of the vehicle as flames tore through the engine.

We're told Dick was slightly disoriented by the experience but did NOT need medical attention. His wife came to pick him up shortly after and brought him home.

As for the car ... it's toast.

I don't think an 87 year old man should be driving on an LA freeway

He's too old to be driving; esp on the freeways of that armpit called So Calif.

no offense but maybe an 87-year-old shouldn't be driving himself around. if someone hadn't have come by to rescue him he would have asphixiated on the smoke.

Thank goodness he is okay. Dick Van Dyke is a national treasure. Though he should probably be a national treasure with a driver from now on. And kudos to Jason Pennington for being a stand up guy and a genuine hero. Well done, Jason.

This fire had nothing to do with Dick being 87 -- the problem was the Jaguar. My friend has had two Jags and both cars had serious problems, including suddenly losing power on the freeway. I drove one of them and would never want to drive an X type again. Now that Tata Motors (India) owns Jaguar, unfortunately the quality will probably get even worse.

All Jags burst into flames it's true. Idiot. 100% of the Jags your friend has owned break down, yet thousands across the world rack up 100,000's of miles on the original engine. Probably just bad luck for Dick Van Dyke.
