George Hill

No Regrets

I Chose Kids Over Team USA Basketball

8/21/2013 12:15 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

NBA star George Hill stands by his decision to ditch the Team USA basketball training camp to attend a kids charity event instead ... even if it means he blew his shot to don the red, white and blue.

The Pacers guard shocked the sports world last month, when he bailed on Team USA's invite-only camp to attend a bball camp for kids in Texas -- a move that could cost him any chance of making the team.

So when our photog spotted him in L.A. Sunday, he had to ask -- are there any regrets now that he's had a few weeks to reflect on blowing a HUGE opportunity?

But George says HELLLLLL NO. He explains, "I probably messed up my chances, but if I can impact one kid's life ... that's way more important than the USA basketball team."

So we gotta ask ...

Too bad there are not many other athletes/celebrities like him out there. Kids' role models nowadays are steroid using, paparazzi beating, fake baking meatballs with a leaked, homemade sex tape.

George Hill knows where his root are. He grew up in the poor section of Indianapolis. You should read about his real background. My brother was a volunteer basketball coach, and met George when some bullies were roughing up my nephew, and George stepped in to save the chunky little white boy. He practically became a member of their family. George's athletic abilites really impressed my brother, who took George under his wing. My brother's family is not well off, but one summer, their vacation involved taking George with them and driving across the country, and paid for George to attend a Michael Jordan basketball camp. This gentle giant is the real deal. He spends a lot of his time with the less fortunate kids from Indianapolis, and gives back 10 fold. George Hill's background could make for another real life "Blind Side". My brother's family still treats him like one of their own.

en Todo Momento!!

for all the gold medals the us basketball team has brought home to his country, and how this has not ever been rewarded to especially the african american community, i totally see where he's coming from. as funding for such awards goes directly back into society, it's crazy that probably 90% of these 'olympic rewarded funds' went straight to white boy college basketball, totally leaving black or african american communities in the dust, ignored and not even one glance back in 'appreciation' or gratitude. and look at who 'continues' to go back and win gold medals for this country? not no college basketball superstar, that's for sure, even though this is where all the funding for future olympic victories went to.
