Fox Sports Commentator

FIRED For Homophobic Comments ... BUT

9/8/2013 11:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A FOX Sports Southwest commentator was reportedly fired for making some pretty awful anti-gay comments ... the wrinkle is that he hurled the homophobic remarks long before he was hired.

Craig James -- a star at SMU and a former member of the New England Patriots in the '80s -- ran for a senate seat in Texas.  During a 2012 debate, he had some choice words:  Gay people "would answer to the Lord for their actions," and being gay was a choice.

James was hired last month by Fox Sports Southwest and then reportedly fired after just one appearance.  According to the Dallas Morning News, an unnamed Fox Sports honcho said, "We just asked ourselves how Craig's statements would play in our human resources department."

Apparently Fox didn't fully vet the dude.  The question -- should he be sacked for statements he made before coming on board?

No I think he was fired for saying the word Lord in public.
He is right. The real bigots are the ones who lust after the money with the words "In God we trust", yet claim that no God exists and the the words of the bible are to be ignored! Go figure?

I guess there no such thing as freedom of speech anymore. That's gay.

What does his views on gays have to do with football?? Not everyone supports the gay life style TMZ.everytime anyone famous says anything anti gay you guys report it like the people who use their rights to speak their mind are Nazis and the whole world should punish said celebrity to death!! Please you people are too sensitive. If a celebrity came out and said "I hate gays" then you can report they are anti gay. Stop putting your own personal views when you report. This is supposed to be news, not editorials.

Why is this news? Consider the source.... a redneck, unevolved, unaware Texas republican. YAWN!

No he shouldn't be fired morons. We live in a country that allows us freedom of speech. All of you little drones who support stuff like this are ruining this country. Also, his religion says that being Gay is a sin. We all have a right to pursue whatever religion we want, so there's another right of his being infringed upon. And one more point, I'd love to go back in time and scan every word that came out of all of your stupid faces, tmz reporters included, and destroy you with all of the ridiculous stuff you might have said. He has the right to dislike whatever he wants without losing his job. What a bunch of little babies everyone is becoming.

Just another example of Left Wing PC run amuck. Whatever happened to free speech and the right to have your own opinion? Not in todays world. The left will destroy you, just ask Paula Deen. Don't ask Alec Baldwin though, he supports Obama so he is allowed to get away with it.

Guys like him always preach the Bible to everyone and lecture everyone on what's right and what's wrong. Their first ones that always end up cheating on their wives’ are pay for sex from Hookers, so please give me break with that

Another senseless firing...

There is no longer any 1st Amendment protection in public life unless what one has to say is anti-white or anti-capitalist or anti-Christian; that's just the sad fact. But in an ideal Republic this dude should feel free to express his opinions just like
the founding fathers intended. Unluckily for him even Fox seems to have turned cowardly.

They absolutely did the right thing, and I'll tell you why. This guy isn't Average Joe, he's a public figure. As such, he has a greater responsibility towards public image as he is a mouthpiece to the masses and more importantly (from their business end) he represents and reflects the company he works for. Fox News has enough controversial figures on board and are developing a reputation, from a PR standpoint this guy is a disaster waiting to happen and Fox has every right to protect its brand and image. From a business standpoint, their sole aims would be money and ratings, and someone who can alienate pockets of the population and potential viewers is a liability, and again, Fox has enough of a storm brewing on their hands. This makes perfect sense in a business, this doesn't factor into the Free Speech debate. Just as employers vet employees, so does Fox.

I do not agree with his view but why hire him in the first place...........................I guess Alec Baldwin is the only one allowed to make homophobic comments and because his views do not line up he is given a pass.....maybe this guy should do the same.

I get why he was fired I am just tired of the double standard we see all the time. If a thought is wrong then it should be the same process no matter who says it. JMO

I thought he did a very good job of delivering his opinion and being sensitive about it. He leads with "we" all will be judged one day and then says they will be judged. Tmz starts by saying "awful homophobic" comments. That's trying to get clicks. I expected an Alec Baldwin rant and got the exact opposite.
