Nicki Minaj

Huge Hit 'Starships' Is a Rip-Off ...

According to Lawsuit

9/12/2013 5:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Nicki Minaj's massive hit "Starships" is full-on deja vu to EDM star Clive Tanaka -- because it sounds pretty damn identical to a song he released a year before Nicki's ... and now he's suing her over it.

Tanaka filed a federal suit in Chicago this week against Nicki, 3 writers, and the song's producer -- claiming copyright infringement on his 2011 tune ... "Neu Chicago."

Listen to a snippet of "Starships" ... which came out in 2012 ... and then listen to Tanaka's song (below).

Tanaka went so far as to edit both songs on top of each other ... and posted the end result.

The only question we have is ... what took Tanaka so long to sue?

Tanaka will need to prove that Nicki or those who wrote the song or whatever had access to his song in order to prove copyright infringement. Not saying I like Nicki Minaj (I don't), but that's usually how these things work. if there was access to his work and they used it without his permission, it's a slam dunk. If the chords, melodies, etc are just similar and there was no pre-awareness, it's a bit more complicated.

Definitely stolen. and the deal sealer is that Minaj's producers for Starships were Swedish, and Neu Chicago was on multiple TV commercials and shows in Sweden during that time. We have to admit that we are biased, though, we made this video with Clive and released it yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfI7FhmloJA

You can't sue because someone used the same chord progression as you. This whole thing is Bull****.

BS BS BS

These songs use the most basic 3-chord progression possible and they happen to be in the same key. Nice try

Of course this sounds the same.. The whole genre of this music sounds the same.. Auto tuned electronic drum sound... I don't get it.. If it wasn't for her in that bikini I wouldn't have even watched half of it.. It's a shame that her body and not her genuine musical talent sells this junk.. Put it on with no video and 10 other songs from different girls and you won't know who is who....

She's never been original tho...

Her harajuku style
Lil kim photo poses/outfits
Using busta rhyme lyrics

So this is no surprise, I never understood the hype anyway.

I'm no music expert, but the basic beat and rhythm of Tanaka's song doesn't change throughout the song. And with the time of the beats matching those of Niki's it would appear that the songs are the same, but I think it is a coincidence.

As someone else said, sometimes it is hard to hear the similarities in these type of cases. In this case though even I can clearly hear that it is exactly the same.

Just pay the guy what he deserves.
