Tom Hanks

Newbie Lawyer

Tanked Domestic Violence Case

9/13/2013 12:50 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The person who torpedoed the domestic violence case in which Tom Hanks sat as a juror is a rookie lawyer, fresh out of law school  ... TMZ has learned

The lawyer is a 31-year-old woman who graduated last year from an L.A. law school. TMZ broke the story ... she approached Tom Hanks in the stairwell of the courthouse and started gushing about what a great guy he was to sit on a jury -- a BIG no no.  Once the judge found out, the case fell apart.

Turns out ... she's part of a volunteer program in the L.A. City Attorney's Office, where newbie lawyers work for up to one year and get experience trying real cases.  It's great for them.  As for what the City Attorney gets -- cheap labor, because the lawyers don't get a cent for their work.

Sources inside the City Attorney's Office tell TMZ ... there's a lot of controversy over the program.  Some of the seasoned lawyers are grousing that the younguns are not experienced enough to handle criminal cases.

As for the starstruck lawyer in the domestic violence case -- we're not using her name because it's unfair to taint her for a rookie mistake.

After all, it WAS Tom Hanks.

She should get a bill for the time she wasted instead of the tax payers paying for it and select a new jury

I hope from now on all of these LA rookies are warned to not talk to any jurors. Even if they're a star. You'd think if they got through law school they'd understand that though.

This is one case where a Domestic Violence Victim should be able to Sue the DA office for being very stupid, to tank her case.

Has the bar exam in California been lowered?
I'm not a lawyer and I know better that the attorneys for either side are not to communicate in any fashion with the jury. Don't know what law school she went, but apparently they didn't teach her the most basic rules.

I'm glad TMZ didn't use the newbie's name. Great call, Mr. Levin!

I don't suppose anyone gave a second of thought to the person who was the domestic violence victim.

$150.00 is slightly more than what I paid here in Florida for a burned out tail light citation.

Rookie or not, she should have known better. One of the most important things stressed during trial is appropriate conduct between attorneys and jurors, jurors and witnesses, attorneys and witnesses, jurors and jurors. Basic fundamentals even an intern should know. But it was Tom Hanks!

It's unfair to taint her for a rookie mistake? When has TMZ ever cared about fairness?

No worries. The rookie lawyer's stupidity has guarenteed her a future working for Holder in the US Attorneys Office.

How come everybody who works in the private sector is required to pay their employees but a government office (one in the state with highest tax rate no less) gets to exploit the unemployment rate by hiring "volunteer lawyers" to donate a year of their time with no promise of a job at the end. I guess the City Attorney just learned that "you get what you pay for" the hard way.
