1:00 PM PT --  Chad just apologized about the incident on Twitter, saying, "I want to apologize for my inappropriate antics at the drum clinic,my joke about team rivalries went too far. Flamenco [sic] fans...I'm sorry."

gray-bar-update

Red Hot Chili Peppers
drummer Chad Smith might leave Brazil with some extra scar tissue ... 'cause a ton of fans in the country want him dead after he desecrated the jersey of the most popular club team in South America.

Chad made a big mistake Sunday afternoon in Belo Horizonte during a drum clinic when he was gifted a Flamengo soccer club jersey -- and shoved it down the back of his pants, as if to say he wipes his ass with it.

The crowd immediately boo'ed the crap out of Chad ... and one unruly fan even threw something at his HEAD!

RHCP already performed a few shows since the debacle ... but a big group of fans are just catching wind of what happened ... and now they're vowing to raise hell at tomorrow's RHCP concert in Rio.

One angry Flamengo fan wrote a death threat in the comments section of the YouTube page where the video was posted -- saying, "Will arrive in Rio de Janeiro you will die motherf***er."

Another said, "the fans of Flamengo wants to kill you, are already planning to invade his show to throw rocks at you."

Before you judge the grammar -- it ain't their fault ... it seems Google still has some kinks to work out with the translation software.

I honestly don't get why TMZ always has something bad to say about Brazil when whenever they have news about some stupid celebrity like Bieber and this dude from RHCP they keep on talking about what people in Brazil do but they never say anything bad about the celebrity. If they're in our country they should at least show some respect . Imagine if some stupid foreigner went to your country and illegally spraypaint a wall or say that his going to wipe his ass with a soccer jersey that represents a lot to the country. No one likes when someone says something dumb about their country,TMZ probably doesn't even know Brazil and still they write bull****. Stop saying brazilian people are always threatening someone or trying to throw things at them because most of people here are always gentle and kind with everyone but we don't accept when someone disrespects our country and you also wouldn't like it if it had happened in the USA.
I think you should do some research about what you're posting on your page otherwise this is just another ****ty page on the internet.

1. Yes, we Brazilians do love soccer. Very much.
2. Yes, some soccer players in places like COLOMBIA have been killed over soccer, not in Brazil. They were killed because they lost. We (almost!) always win.
3. He just did this to the bigger team in south america with a huge number of very passionated supporters.
4. He will have some serious trouble while in Rio (Flamengo is from Rio).
5. And YES, death threats ARE illegal in B R A Z I L.
6. Don´t judge the grammar! ;)

Calling them Flamenco fans (not Flamengo) fans probably won't go over too well either.

Brazilians are known to be fanatic about football but hey, what if a foreign artist would pull the same stunt in the US with a NFL Jersey?

I bet the reaction would be quite similar, actually.
