Tom Cruise

Admits Katie Holmes Fled Because of Scientology

11/8/2013 9:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Tom Cruise admitted that Katie Holmes left him partly because of his ties to Scientology.

Cruise sat for a deposition in his $50 million libel suit against a magazine company that claimed he abandoned his daughter Suri.

In the deposition ... Cruise squirmed in his chair as the lawyer for the magazine repeatedly asked if Katie fled their marriage because of the Church.  Cruise hemmed and hawed, suggesting it wasn't true, and then the lawyer asked whether "Katie Holmes left you in part to protect Suri from Scientology."

Cruise answered:  "Did she say that?  That was one of the assertions, yes."

Cruise also admitted that Suri is NOT a member of Scientology anymore.

The story that triggered the lawsuit claimed Tom abandoned his daughter.  In his depo, Cruise says for the period between June 18, 2012 and Thanksgiving, 2012, he estimates he only saw Suri 10 days.  During one stretch ... Tom admits he didn't see his daughter for more than 100 days.

The lawyer for the magazine grilled Tom about his desire to see Suri.  The lawyer pulled out aviation documents showing Tom flew from Pittsburgh to London on Oct. 15 for the International Association of Scientology convention.   Tom returned to Pittsburgh the next day.   Tom said it was very important to attend, and then the lawyer made it clear Tom never took such quick trips to see Suri.

And in another part of the deposition, the magazine's lawyer brought up the part of the story in which they claimed Suri was "upset and crying a lot" when Tom was absent.  In the depo, Tom admits being absent, but adamantly denied Suri was upset.

My Job's As Hard As

1108-tom-cruise-gettyTom Cruise not only thinks he trains harder than Olympic athletes, he believes his job as a professional actor is as grueling as fighting the war in Afghanistan -- this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.

As we reported, Cruise recently sat for a deposition in his $50 million libel suit against a magazine publisher that claimed he abandoned daughter Suri -- and his quotes are GOLD.

First, the Middle East -- Tom says his location shoots are just like serving a tour in Afghanistan, "That's what it feels like. And certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal."
1108_afghanistan_war_footerAs for his physical training, Tom said, "There is difficult physical stamina and preparation. Sometimes I've spent months, a year, and sometimes two years preparing for a single film." But the kicker, he adds, "A sprinter for the Olympics, they only have to run two races a day. When I'm shooting, I could potentially have to run 30, 40 races a day, day after day."

1108_olympic_action_footerBut it's not all grenades and triathlons  ... Tom says he's only flown commercial ONCE in the last 4 years ... and that was because he had no choice.

And there's this ... Tom says the skills he's picked up along the way have provided shortcuts in his relationship with Suri.  For example, he says it's not always necessary for him to be physically around Suri, because he can tell her vivid stories on the phone that come to life.  Tom says, "I've gotten very good at [talking on the phone]. I've gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories and they like hearing it."

Yeah, blame it on religion. What else would we die for? Oh, sorry, these people just have to perform. Religion is a side-show, it gives them a bully-pulpit to bang on. Like, religion is a badge to wear. How could you believe in something you hold so dear, and act completely the opposite?

An actor's job isn't like being in the army and I'm sure he didn't say so.

a long time Leno fan!

Comments are classic "bullying" of an amazing, highly successful actor. I think less confident people often become anxious when they read about someone else's success. The fact that they are unable to meet with success themselves triggers hateful for those who can. Likely no one here could possibly withstand the abuse he has been subjected to. Pitiful.
I LOVE his acting and ALWAYS anticipate his next movie.
There's no difference between bullying and how the media constantly attempts to demolish this actor in every way possible. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU LIKE HIS PERSONAL CHOICES OR NOT, NO ONE DESERVES TO HAVE HIS EVERY WORD TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT & USED AGAINST HIM. I recall Tom was filming something out of the country during the period of time being discussed here. Everything he did at the time was being scrutinized so badly. Everyone, chill.

Tom was trying to clear his name by filing this lawsuit but now it seems that he has exposed himself as an absent parent. He may have not abandoned Suri completely but he has abandoned her in some form. He needs to quit this ridiculous religion once & for all. His daughter should not be used to not having her father around.

Regardless of Scientology they got a divorce get over it. At least this man does not have to parade around in Gold Chains to try and be or look talented. He actually is. Sorry for the loss.

He clearly did not see her regularly after the split, so I don't know how he thinks he can win. Forcing him to say that Scientology is more important to him than his family is very damaging. I think there are going to be more negative stories about Tom Cruise and he won't be able to fight them. .

Well, a double for me with this story. I used to live here Cruise partialy grew up. He went to school with my niece in Glen Ridge (the only town in the US entirely lighted by gas-lamps). i also used to teach in 'Betsytown, aka Elizabeth, where Hubbard came up with the idea for developing Scientology when he was 'out of work.' So, once again, as always, NJ is the center of things!

It's not like Tom Cruise was spending his time 24/7 on the "JET SET CIRCUIT" ignoring ALL OF HIS OBLIGATIONS like so many celebrities. I wouldn't consider his "PRE-SCHEDULED" career related commitments as "ABANDONMENT"!!! Keep in mind, that Katie Holmes "ABRUPTLY" took Suri from their "PERMANENT" Beverly Hills home and relocated to NYC without telling Tom Cruise about her plans to divorce him. According to the media, he was "CAUGHT OFF GUARD" by her actions in the middle of filming a picture overseas. If he was "SHELL SHOCKED", I'm quite sure so was Suri by her mother's "INTENSE PARANOIA" regarding being pursued by Scientology operatives and living in very "UNFAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS"!!! For Christ's sake, Suri was a child who was snatched away from her "PRIMARY HOME" and sensed her "MOTHER'S INTENSE STRESS"!!! Tom Cruise may have wanted to be much more available but when your spouse leaves you, "IT'S BEST TO ALLOW YOUR ATTORNEYS TO DO THEIR JOBS"!!! Neither side knew exactly what to expect from each other and how everything would play out. It seems these so-called "ABANDONMENT ISSUES" were more related to his relationship with Katie Holmes than their child, Suri. I believe Katie Holmes wanted Tom Cruise to "ABANDON" his ties with Scientology to save their marriage and was "SHELL SHOCKED" when he quickly agreed to her divorce terms. Only someone very close to "HER" sold the "ABANDONMENT STORY" to that magazine.

What do you expect, Scientology is a cult written by a man who knew nothing about the bible, but rather a way of life, which at best is strange as L Ron Hubbard was strange.
