Tom Cruise

My Job's As Hard As

Fighting in Afghanistan

11/11/2013 6:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Cruise's lawyer, Bert Fields, says the notion that Tom compares his acting to fighting a war is a distortion, pointing to a section in the deposition -- not part of the deposition that was publicly released -- in which Tom is asked, "Do you believe the situations [being in a movie and fighting a war in Afghanistan] are the same?"  Tom replies, "Oh come on."  Fields says that clearly means "of course not."

For the record, here's Tom's quote, responding to the opposing lawyer in the deposition:

Lawyer:  "Now, your counsel has publicly equated your absence from Suri for these extended periods of time as being analogous to someone fighting in Afghanistan.  Are you aware of that?"

Cruise:  "I didn't hear the Afghanistan, but that's what it feels like, and certainly on this last movie, it was brutal.  It was brutal."

Tom Cruise not only thinks he trains harder than Olympic athletes, he believes his job as a professional actor is as grueling as fighting the war in Afghanistan -- this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.

As we reported, Cruise recently sat for a deposition in his $50 million libel suit against a magazine publisher that claimed he abandoned daughter Suri -- and his quotes are GOLD.

First, the Middle East -- Tom says his location shoots are just like serving a tour in Afghanistan, "That's what it feels like. And certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal."
1108_afghanistan_war_footerAs for his physical training, Tom said, "There is difficult physical stamina and preparation. Sometimes I've spent months, a year, and sometimes two years preparing for a single film." But the kicker, he adds, "A sprinter for the Olympics, they only have to run two races a day. When I'm shooting, I could potentially have to run 30, 40 races a day, day after day."

1108_olympic_action_footerBut it's not all grenades and triathlons  ... Tom says he's only flown commercial ONCE in the last 4 years ... and that was because he had no choice.

And there's this ... Tom says the skills he's picked up along the way have provided shortcuts in his relationship with Suri.  For example, he says it's not always necessary for him to be physically around Suri, because he can tell her vivid stories on the phone that come to life.  Tom says, "I've gotten very good at [talking on the phone]. I've gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories and they like hearing it."

Wake up people and realize when you are being played. If you read the actual deposition, it is CLEAR that he is not trying to say his work is as important as a soldier in Afghanistan. You should be pissed at the opposing council. They are the ones who brought the question up. And you shouldn't let a website like TMZ get you all riled up. They are just trying to get hits to their site and you all just let it happen.

Typical american mentality a quick jump on a bandwagon of hate.I believe his work is phisically alot more harder than patrolling in a car, soldiers are 90% of time doing routine work, that doesnt require very much phisicaly strength,he does all of his stunt work alone, climbing, fliying helicopters, cars, this guy is crazy.
He has nothing to be ashamed of,this is his opinion,at least he can sleep at night.
Because killing unnarmed civillians from a helicoper or a plane is such a heroic act of patriotism, please,im tired of these double standards.

CNN is reporting that tmz misquoted tom cruise. He explicitly stated (when he was asked) he can't compare movie making to a soldier fighting in Afghanistan. Tmz needs to retract this story.

Turns out tmz misquoted tomc ruise when he answered a question about Afghanistan. He actually explicitly stated that he can never compare what he does to soldiers serving and fighting in Afghanistan. They twisted his words. CNN is reporting this today. Tmz owes this man an apology for misquoting him like this

My daughter, her husband and others in the military Tom, have a message for you. GFY! It must be hard waking up each day knowing how you will pay for things; just the most basic of things. There are many of our soldiers/families are homeless, living on food stamps, making less than $1200 a month, just trying to make ends meet. Not to mention just trying to stay alive, so they can come home to their families. This military family and those we know also serving have decided to boycott all your movies...You are a disgrace.

Boycott his movies and take away his income. It won't make him broke but it will show him what we think of him. As a veteran, I am so insulted by his ignorance. My son came back with PTSD and we deal everyday with that. I wish he had to deal with a TBI or PTSD for a day and he would keep his trap shut.

The only difference Tom is your not looking to get shot or blown up for real you ignorant putz. God, the more Hollywood actors open their big fat traps shows who the really are. Dude, go jump up and down on a couch and tell us how much you love yourself.
