Tom Cruise

My Job's As Hard As

Fighting in Afghanistan

11/11/2013 6:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Cruise's lawyer, Bert Fields, says the notion that Tom compares his acting to fighting a war is a distortion, pointing to a section in the deposition -- not part of the deposition that was publicly released -- in which Tom is asked, "Do you believe the situations [being in a movie and fighting a war in Afghanistan] are the same?"  Tom replies, "Oh come on."  Fields says that clearly means "of course not."

For the record, here's Tom's quote, responding to the opposing lawyer in the deposition:

Lawyer:  "Now, your counsel has publicly equated your absence from Suri for these extended periods of time as being analogous to someone fighting in Afghanistan.  Are you aware of that?"

Cruise:  "I didn't hear the Afghanistan, but that's what it feels like, and certainly on this last movie, it was brutal.  It was brutal."

Tom Cruise not only thinks he trains harder than Olympic athletes, he believes his job as a professional actor is as grueling as fighting the war in Afghanistan -- this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.

As we reported, Cruise recently sat for a deposition in his $50 million libel suit against a magazine publisher that claimed he abandoned daughter Suri -- and his quotes are GOLD.

First, the Middle East -- Tom says his location shoots are just like serving a tour in Afghanistan, "That's what it feels like. And certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal."
1108_afghanistan_war_footerAs for his physical training, Tom said, "There is difficult physical stamina and preparation. Sometimes I've spent months, a year, and sometimes two years preparing for a single film." But the kicker, he adds, "A sprinter for the Olympics, they only have to run two races a day. When I'm shooting, I could potentially have to run 30, 40 races a day, day after day."

1108_olympic_action_footerBut it's not all grenades and triathlons  ... Tom says he's only flown commercial ONCE in the last 4 years ... and that was because he had no choice.

And there's this ... Tom says the skills he's picked up along the way have provided shortcuts in his relationship with Suri.  For example, he says it's not always necessary for him to be physically around Suri, because he can tell her vivid stories on the phone that come to life.  Tom says, "I've gotten very good at [talking on the phone]. I've gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories and they like hearing it."

I am not sure how Tom can compare his acting (faking it) to serving in a real combat zone where soldiers like my son go 3 weeks or more without showering or any contact with thier families, are under constant fire from the enemy, are infested with rodents and other rabid animals, eat MRE's for weeks at a time, are sleep deprived and work 20+ hours a day or days without sleep. You are also sleeping with Afghan soldiers who at anytime can attack you. This is real life and thousands of soldiers sacrifice their lives. This is not acting or enhanced on a blue screen! THIS IS REAL! There were times I as a mother did not sleep for days due to worry and fear that my son was in danger. My son experienced the sight and smell of a war zone, the sight and smell of Afghanistan. He said its a sight and smell you never forget. I belive it is a sight and smell that still keeps him up at night or flashes through his mind during the day....and Tom Cruise experiences this in his private jets, on the sets of multi-million dollar fully catered movie sets, or in his mansions??? He makes millions of dollars to act and travel the world. He makes my sons yearly income in days or weeks without the sacrifice, without the danger, without starvation, or sleep depravation. I am completely offended as a military mother and fellow American that someone as pampered and pompus as Tom Cruise could utter such untrue and disrespect toward our American Soldiers. It will be a cold day in hell before I or my family watch him and his small man complex in ANY movie.

Of course he's a very modest guy who would never brag on himself or his abilities.

Gee Tom do you have a clue. Your job won't end up making you dead before the day is done. Oh and if you feel like seeing your spoiled children you just hop on a private jet to go see them. I'm sure our spoiled military men and women in the Middle East agree with making is tough. This man lives in fantasy land!

Maybe he has a point on a physical level, but he is beyond delusional if he thinks what he does compares to the stress of knowing you could get your head blown off at any moment.

Grueling! Yes. Dangerous? No. And how about that pay? Comparable to a soldier? Heck no. What a doofus remark.

Yeah, sure, what Tom does is just as difficult as a tour of Afghanistan...except in Tom's case the director yells "cut" when things go wrong. Tom acts like an entitled, spoiled brat.

Really? His jobs is as grueling as someone putting their life on the line for the democratic life we live? His life is not in danger. There is absolutely no comparison to someone who not only risks his or HER life, but has to live on welfare-comparable pay. What an a $$!

OK he needs to hook up with Farrah Abraham they both have hands off approaches to parenthood. Also well we know how Farrah likes its, which if rumors are true about Tom well then he can just close his eyes.
