'Goldbergs' Star

Horrific Car Crash

Eyes Allegedly Off the Road

11/13/2013 10:53 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

"The Goldbergs" star Hayley Orrantia put a 23-year-old man in ICU with a brain injury recently after T-boning his car at a high speed -- allegedly while taking her eyes off the road.

19-year-old Orrantia had been filming all night on Sept. 28, the day of the accident.  The other driver's family says she ran a red light while checking the GPS on her phone, and then plowed into Ryan Houghton's car.

We're told Houghton was rushed to a nearby hospital with multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, and remained in the ICU for a week. He is now in a rehab facility.

Houghton's family is currently soliciting donations online to help pay his medical bills.

Drugs and alcohol are believed NOT to have been factors in the crash. Law enforcement sources tell us Hayley was cited for running a red light.

Orrantia's lawyer tells TMZ, "The Police record will speak for itself, Hayley was not touching the GPS when she was driving and the allegations are coming from people who were not in the vehicle nor present at the scene at the time."

Put down your DAMM CELL PHONE AND BUY A GPS SYSTEM ATTACHED TO THE CAR. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE THINKING IT IS OK TO BE ON YOUR CELL PHONE FOR ANY REASON WHILE YOU ARE BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE CAR.

i ride a motorcycle in Los angeles and split lanes between cars, every other driver is on the cell phone and could care less about anything or anyone else around them on the road as long as they can play with the cell phone. FACT !

So her brilliant lawyer says she was NOT touching her phone, picking up her phone, changing cd's, etc... her own lawyer just basically stated she didn't take her eyes off the road therefore she hit this man's car in the middle t-boning him at a high rate of speed ON PURPOSE!!!

I love The Goldbergs. Best thing on TV because it's like TV used to be. The accident? Let the lawyers fight it out.

Very sad. A TBI can be anything from temporary problems to catastrophic, life-changing damage. I hope to God Orratia has great insurance for her victim...he will need it.

Ummm, am I the only who thinks this was an "accident" , unintentional.. just like other accidents that people have? Obviously accidents happen because someone was careless in some way, but that's what makes it an "accident", not intentional. I wish she would step up and pay for the hospital bills but some of these comments are just plain stupid.

Not understanding the bashing here.

She was cited for running a red light. She was cited for being distracted or negligent of any sort.

The only ones making allegations are the guy's family who were not even there.

If they are so sure what she was doing, then they would certainly know what he was doing in his car at the time of the accident. Because they were there, or stupidly claim to act like they were.

Legally, she is only obligated to pay for anything above what her insurance policy allows.

It sucks what happened to him.

But they're going about it all wrong and look more like gold diggers or were convinced by some sleazy lawyer to argue this in the public instead of a courtroom.

The family should be screaming at her insurance company, not at her.

Ironically, even if she admitted texting or doing whatever, they would still have to go after her insurance.

So again, I don't understand the bashing or the lame accusations from the family.

Sounds like she was not in reasonable control of her vehicle if she was not watching the road....lawsuit should be filed on the man's behalf. I have always felt phones, make-up, reading, smoking, eating or drinking and any activity that is not directly related to driving should be illegal to do while operating a vehicle. That is not big brother restricting rights but common sense that no one seems to have any more so they need to be forced into actually thinking abot the fact they are operating a lethal device and their attention should be no where else but on their driving.

blame the phone and car companies, they add all of these distractions to drivers, cell phone/GPS/text, in the day you waited until you got home to call or talk to someone, now days lets risk my life and others just to talk, what is so important that it cant wait, maybe you cant wait but you destroy another family, and if it happens to you will you feel remorse, my wife was killed by a texter, now she is in prison for 20 years, is your life worth that just talk to a friend, do you think that the friend that she was texting cares?
