Jameis Winston

Signs Cops Covered Up Sexual Assault Allegations

11/14/2013 12:10 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

There's evidence Tallahassee cops tried to sweep the sexual assault investigation targeting Florida State University QB Jameis Winston under the rug to protect the team and its star player ... and ONLY took aggressive steps after TMZ Sports started asking questions.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us they never even knew about the investigation until Tuesday ... JUST ONE DAY AFTER TMZ Sports began making calls to cops about the alleged assault.

Our sources in the State Attorney's Office say ... it was highly unusual cops wouldn't have filled them in about the case until this week.  The sources say cops would have typically notified them when the investigation was completed, and Winston's lawyer reportedly says cops told him it was completed in February.

Now get this ... TMZ Sports started calling police about the case on Monday.  We were told someone would get back to us later that day, but there was radio silence for 2 days ... we made repeated calls Tuesday and Wednesday and no one got back to us until late Wednesday afternoon.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us ... the timing -- getting notified about the case months after it supposedly was closed and just a day after TMZ started calling -- is suspicious.

The State Attorney has now re-activated the case and sent it back to cops for further investigation.

And there's a twist -- guess what would happen if Winston was even CHARGED with felony sexual assault -- under FSU's rules ... he would be AUTOMATICALLY BENCHED ... killing the team's national championship hopes and his Heisman Trophy chances.

Good grief, TMZ. First you have to tell us that every pap incident doesn't involve your photographers - and now you're creating news. Don't strain yourselves patting yourselves on the back too hard.

Here's a "sign" for you, TMZ. Stop acting like you made this happen. This is even more pathetic than you always saying it wasn't one of your photographers causing problems.

Asst Leon county prosecutor says in interview that police do not hand over all cases to prosecutor. Only those where the police have established that reasonable evidence has been collected to indicate that a crime was committed and an arrest is desired. Questions are being raised likewise as to why the victim never called the prosecutors office. The idea of coverup pretty much not going anywhere. Winston was a red shirt freshman and the starting job was on the radar for Coker not winston. Winston showed a lot of promise in June and July work and started to get in the mix. A decision on the starter wasn't made until late august. Prior to the first game winston was relatively unknown in Florida. This assault has occurred almost nine months prior.

TMZ...WOW...I have never seen a "respectable" news outlet jump on a case with such little evidence...way to rush to judgement. SHAME on you. Refer to facts. Huge discrepancy in height. Winston wasn't named until way after assault. Winston was never even questioned. I don't care if it took two days for someone to get back to you. You lost a lot of credibility in my book. Hernandez case got you sniffing around for a coverup? Go back to Gainesville. I hope they sue you for defamation. #thisiswhywehatethemedia

Actually that's not a rule by FSU that he would no longer be part of the team, that's a rule by the state of Florida he becomes ineligible.

Maybe the cops didn't want to see yet another man's life ruined by yet another false rape allegation?

Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman said today normal procedure for criminal cases in Leon County calls for police to give information to prosecutors only if there is evidence for an arrest, or if it is a "close call." She says police do not tell prosecutors when they have decided against pursuing an arrest.

I will add, Important to remember since complaint was filed Winston was a nobody at least relative to fsu. He had never even taken a snap and was not know much around town or campus. Coker was on the radar as a starter and Winston didnt even get considered much until August or nine months after alleged assault, when he barely won out.

It sounds like to me TMZ Sports should mine their own business. You’re all worried about what Mr. Winston is doing and jumping to conclusions. Now wouldn't it be something if Mr. Winston is not charged with these crimes and he ends up owning TMZ Sports? I could see that happening seeing that you are slandering his name and also causing a 19 year old kid emotional distress. I do not think he is guilty at all. But here is a thought why was this “Victim” up at 4:00 A.M and drunk? Her daddy did a good job raising her-Go drink a 5th and 12 or so beers and make sure you wear a short skirt (I don’t even want to get started). So if he is not charged than maybe she needs to be charged with providing a false statement to police….ever think of that? It was 11 months ago and it’s just now coming out? All I have to say is thanks TMZ Sports for ruining a young man’s reputation and possible his career. Maybe he will see this post and highlight the words “Slander” and “emotional distress”. Either way the kid has not been charged and the fact that you are dragging the kid around makes me sick and also sounds like “racism” to me. Hopefully his lawyer will be in touch with you soon. In the mean time I wonder where Miss. Princess is getting wasted this weekend.

The sexual assault happened last year no? If that's the case, then how is winston considered a star player? 2. Him being charged LAST year and benched wouldn't have done a thing for this yaer, considering the police never charged him. In other words, he would still be playing THIS year.

I know the entire story, and everything you are printing is complete BS.

The kid is NOT a suspect. The kid was NEVER named. The description of the perp does NOT fit.

Can't wait to see you print a huge story when the DA/SA say he was NOT involved in this. And that will happen. However, I'm guessing you won't have the balls to print a retraction of your BS story.

By the way, how much did you pay your "source" in the TPD for all this information?
