Kendrick Lamar

Boycotted GQ Party

Over 'Offensive' Interview

11/15/2013 2:45 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

1115-kendrick-lamar-tmzDespite being named GQ's Rapper of the Year, Kendrick Lamar completely BLEW OFF the mag's Men of the Year Party on Tuesday ... all because he hated the way he was portrayed in his big interview.

In the interview, which GQ released this week, writer Steve Marsh expresses surprise at Kendrick's discipline -- refusing to drink excessively and womanize like other rappers, especially because the over-the-top lifestyle is so prevalent in the game these days.

The writer also spends a lot of time talking about the gang violence endemic in Kendrick's hometown of Compton, which marred rap's history.

And Kendrick and his camp are PISSED, insisting Marsh focused on the wrong details, senselessly romanticizing a dark time in hip hop, when the article should have been a celebration of Kendrick's successes.

The CEO of Kendrick's label Top Dawg Entertainment Anthony Tiffith tells us the interview portrayed him and his company in a negative light and he won't stand for it -- "To say he was 'surprised at our discipline' is completely disrespectful ... Kendrick deserved to be accurately documented."

Tiffith says, "The racial overtones immediately reminded everyone of a time in hip-hop that was destroyed by violence, resulting in the loss of two of our biggest stars [Tupac and B.I.G.] ... As a result of this misrepresentation, I pulled Kendrick from his performance at GQ's annual Man Of The Year party."

Tiffith adds, "While we think it's a tremendous honor to be named as one of the Men Of The Year, these lazy comparisons and offensive suggestions are something we won't tolerate."

Stars like this are used to being able to control everything in their world by surrounding themselves with yes men. Guess he was surprised that outside of his bubble people don't always do what you want.

I'm so glad the days that rappers are thugs, who sensationalized guns and violence and drugs are over. Whats that you say, its not? Just about every rapper still raps about those things? Huh, that's weird.

It seems to me as though the writer feels all black rappers should be pigeonholed as garish, womanizing thugs. Me thinks he's a bit bigoted.

why is TMZ reporting on this kid?

Kendrick was upset because GQ was "senselessly romanticizing a dark time in hip hop"'s what we read about EVERY day with these "rappers". They are ALWAYS in the news and always in trouble! Don't blame GQ for something YOUR peers portray EVERY day!

First of all, fire that manager immediately. Stop caring about what some reporter wrote about in article and allow your client to attend this celebration. Just one album in and this kid has become Kanye West. I'm tired of our black men becoming so narcissistic. It's called show business. Don't bight the media hand that feeds you.

who cares, never heard of him......and since when does a rapper read GQ, its not like rappers use it for fashion sense, or can they even read the articles?
