EXCLUSIVE

Aaron Carter may want candy, but he can't afford it anymore ... because TMZ has learned he's gone belly up, filing for bankruptcy ... and the papers reveal sad news about his pooch.

According to legal docs, obtained by TMZ, Aaron's assets total $8,232.16.  Here's the BIG problem.  His liabilities total $2,204,854, which include a $31,166 AmEx bill.

Aaron -- who was a huge pop star and is still on tour, even tonight -- also owes $1,368,140 mil to the IRS.

As for his assets, he lists a 61" flat screen worth $500.  He also lists 2 MacBooks, 2 Headset Mics, a Mini Keyboard, Portable Beats, a speaker, a guitar, $60 in cash, Louis Vuitton backpack, a duffle bag and a printer worth a total of $2,500.  And he owns a Brietling watch worth $3,750.

Here's the saddest part.  He also lists a dog, with a value of ZERO.

Aaron lists his average monthly income at $1,998.75.  As for his monthly expenses -- $2,005, which includes $600 for food, $150 for clothes, and $65 for hygiene.

He's currently living with a family member.

Aaron is not filing for Bankruptcy light, which is often used to reorganize debts.  He's going for the whole, Chapter 7 enchilada, which means the creditors will eat it.

Aaron's rep Steve Honig tells us the singer filed for bankruptcy to move forward with his life and career adding, "the overwhelming majority of the debt he is asking to be discharged is from more than 10 years ago when he was a minor and not in control of his finances."

He is saying his dog is worth zero, my guess is, for 1 of 4 reasons: it is legally property whose value is subjective and without appraisal, worth zero; he just doesn't know how much it's worth so he says zero; he doesn't want to have to sell the dog so he says its worth zero; or he got the dog for free and there is precedent to say its worth zero.

BS! Having known him when he was a kid and at his career peak. He's a good kid! He was a hard worker and gave up so much of his childhood on the road. Sure, he loved performing, but there's always a price. Not just dollars but with your life. When you're in it, you don't know this. Especially while everyone around you tells you this is where you should be. That you should just shut up and be grateful. Having been through Chapter 7 myself while I was on a hit show, nonetheless, this is what happens. Your business managers, publicists and hangers on ride that train hard. A good attorney finds a way when the dust settles and people have soaked you dry( due to your good nature, trust, and naivete) to help you get back on your feet under such bankruptcy laws. It's sad, but this happens so much. Those behind the scene s***bags get rich and move on to the next gravy train. Aaron deserves a fresh start and now he's older and hopefully wiser. I'm so sick of these types of stories that pick nuggets of truth and turn it all around to get peoples attention. Enough already. These are real people and their lives we're dealing with. He already lost his childhood and a sister! Please God society, stop being such a**holes!

Poster child for the U.S. low math scores. December 3 will likely reveal even more dismal results than four years ago. So, whose idea was it to unionize teachers? Hopefully, they're winning because, clearly, the students are not.

I feel bad for him. If you actually know anything about his life, his parents robbed him blind. The majority of that debt is theirs, but he has to pay because it was all made in his name. He was never very popular when you look at it, so unfortunately he probably can't really profit from his "fame" like other celebrities. The kid got a raw deal.

If I remember correctly the kid had serious drug problems, and mommy dearest robbed him blind as well.

In response to the addition of the dog.. I went bankrupt due to surgury.. I was not allowed to place a value on my dog. This was not Aaron stating this value, It is the Bankruptcy court.

I filed Bankruptcy years ago due to surgery.. I was not allowed to place a value on my dog. This was not Aarons claim. This is under the terms of the Bankruptcy court just like in Taxes- you are not allowed to put an animal as a cost/dependent.
