Thousands of "Duck Dynasty" fans are on a mission to end Phil Robertson's network suspension over his anti-gay comments -- 'cause they say A&E is denying him his human rights.

Over 35 THOUSAND people have signed a petition -- which fired up yesterday on Change.org -- demanding A&E end the suspension.

Even worse for the network ... it's being ROASTED on social media by DD fans -- hundreds of people are accusing A&E of not allowing Phil Robertson his basic right to freedom of speech.

One fan put the network on blast saying, "As a gay male, is what he said wrong and not educated about how gay people really are? Yes it was. Does he have the right to speak on what he thinks YES HE DOES!"

The fan adds, "Was I offended NO I WASN'T he is a smart man and could learn the truth about things he has no idea about. He's old school you can't hate on him for his beliefs DO NOT GET RID OF PHIL ON THIS SHOW! KEEP HIM!! I will no longer watch if he's gone!!!"

So, we gotta ask ...

It seems strange that those who want tolerance the most are least tolerant (A&E). Your entertainment industry provided an appropriate comment in the movie The American President when character President Shepard said: "America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free". So where is your free speech and religious tolerance A&E?

Phil Robertson is a good man. What he said is in the bible. He did nothing wrong. I will continue to boycott A&E until they reinstate Phil Robertson. I bet there are tons of stations making offers to the Robertson's. Who needs A&E Jack!

Good God! This has nothing to do with Freedom of Speech! A contract trumps freedom of speech. If you are under contract and you paint your employer in a bad light, there are consequences. Simple.

Honestly surprised at some of the anti-gay comments and reactions; I thought we had evolved a bit further than this. Freedom of speech something that's absolutely protected in a public forum or in everyday life, but television is NOT a public forum. Anyone who is hired to do a job becomes a representative of that project or company, and A&E totally reserves the right to give someone the boot if someone behaves in a way that's contradictory to their ideals. Isn't their right to fire him part of free speech as well? Ahh wait - I'll translate: if y'all don't believe A&E is in the right to say or do what they want to, then y'all are the pot calling the kettle black.

A&E you have lost me as a viewer. I'm not gay so you probably don't care. Its his freedom of speech as well as religion. It's stupid. What's our country coming to?

The first amendment gives us freedom of speech. It does not give us freedom from accountability for our speech. It ensures freedom from imprisonment . . . it does not dictate what an employer has the right to address within the workplace. And thank goodness – can you imagine a society where employees could say any hateful thing with no repercussion? Whether you like A&E’s decision or not, this is not a first amendment issue, and it’s a little frightening how many people believe that it is, including some of our elected officials. Phil Robertson’s freedom of speech has not been threatened . . . he can continue to talk about whatever he wants to talk about without fear of being thrown in jail. But A&E, as a business, has the right to decide that he is no longer a good fit for representing their brand. News flash: he's on a TV show produced by people who control every word that comes out of your mouth. You sign a massive morals clause. You have no right to free speech.

Freedom of Speech does not mean Freedom from Consequence of Speech. Go ahead into a thug neighborhood and scream how those ------s need to be back in the fields farming your cotton for ya. Let's see what happens. Don't worry, I can wait.
---
He opened his mouth and now he pays for it. Do not want to get in trouble for what comes out of your mouth? Do not let it get out of your mouth. Phil knew what he was going to say was controversial, would be misquoted, and that he could get in trouble for it. He did it anyways.
