Philip Seymour Hoffman

'Deadly Heroin' In Play

In Death Investigation

2/3/2014 6:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0131-philip-seymour-getty-01
Philip Seymour Hoffman's death appears to be heroin-related ... and law enforcement is looking at a deadly strain of the drug as one of the operating theories ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... they do NOT know specifics about the heroin found in the NYC apartment where Seymour died.  There were 10 bags found -- 8 of them empty.

Authorities have been tracking a strain of heroin that has killed dozens of people on the East Coast -- just last month.  The heroin is laced with fentanyl, an extremely potent drug prescribed for terminal cancer patients.  The strain is 100 times more powerful than morphine ... it sometimes shuts down the respiratory system.

The drug -- sometimes called "Theraflu," "Bud Ice" and "24K" -- has been linked to 5 deaths on Long Island, 22 deaths in Pennsylvania and 19 on Rhode Island -- all in January.

Cops do NOT know if this strain caused Hoffman's death, but they tell us "everything's in play" until they get results from toxicology.

all these people saying he made a decision to use heroin need to stfu. addiction is a disease. yes, he made a one time decision that got him addicted for life. once an addict, always an addict mentally. he was clean for over 20 years and relapsed, it happens. we need to stop shaming addicts and feel for them. keep in mind im not condoning his use, only saying at that point its not a choice anymore. withdrawal can literally almost kill you. this is coming from someone who hates drugs more than anything, has never touched them, and has lost a lot of friends because of them.

Cause he made some movie..it's a big deal.hundreds die daily from over dosing. He lived in Manhattan and had everything he needed to resolve his problem. I have no pity or sorrow for him. It is the poor who are looking for an escape that garner my sorrow.

I can't glorify a drug addict. He had plenty of money to get himself help; there's no reason he couldn't. For all the nay-sayers, I was very close to someone who was an addict, so I know the struggle, but I also know help is there. No excuse for this

I'm thinking maybe Lindsay Blohan and Justin Tweiber should learn something from this but they probably won't.

river phoenix, cory monteith, who knows how many others, those are the ones of the top of my head... always, these people go to rehab, get clean, but when they relapse they go back to the same amount of drug as when they were using regularly, and their bodies can't handle the massive dose... why do you think someone like charlie sheen can go through suitcases of blow like nothing? his body's already accustomed...
so sad, such wasted talent.... RIP

Lets see. He was shooting up to get ready to pick up his children, who now will live the rest of their lives knowing Daddy killed himself. After Hollywood is done idolizing their fallen comrade, the real victims of this "disease" are the kids. Just check in with the children of sperm donor Michael Jackson.
