Philip Seymour Hoffman

A Single Drink

Ultimately Led to Death

Philip Seymour Hoffman's recent and fatal path down the road of addiction was triggered by an innocent drink ... sources close to the actor tell TMZ.

Hoffman had been sober for 23 years prior to shooting "The Master" -- but during a wrap party in 2012, the actor succumbed to temptation ... and celebrated the movie with a drink ... which quickly became a couple of drinks.

Hoffman acknowledged to confidants ... the drinks opened the floodgates.  Addictions experts all say one drink can destroy an addict's life ... and that seems to be what happened here.

Sources tell us Hoffman didn't begin experimenting with heroin until 2013, after he had already fully fallen off the wagon. We're told he had long been curious about the drug.

It started with snorting -- and last May, he quickly checked into rehab because he was terrified it would escalate to IV use ... which it eventually did.

One single drink did not ultimately lead to his death. That drink was the catalyst that led to further self destructing behaviors. A heroin overdose lead to his death. Please don't make light of the seriousness of his OD.

ok enough, yes he was a fine actor but if he wasn't a star there would be no headlines, just a dead junkie found with a needle in his arm. all their money and fame tossed away and i'm supposed to feel sorry for them. as the late great actor Marlon Brandon said in the Godfather. slap to the face "act like a man"

I wish it was as simple as a drink!!! There is so much more involved in wanting to numb yourself to such and extend that actually put a needle in your arm!!!! If the cause was that simple, so would be the solution...

A single drink didn't lead to his death, a single drink exacerbated his addiction and led him on a destructive path. One of those destructive paths was shooting heroin. A heroin binge ultimately led to his death. Opioid addiction is serious, call it what it is.

So the media does not want you to remember the needle stuck in the dudes arm, they want you to remember the alcohol you can buy at any WalMarts. Making the dude look really good ain't it?

Alcohol ... the great gateway drug. I wonder how it would work if we made that illegal?

If one drink led him to his death by heroin than why are so many people OK with legal marijuana?
I thought those folks said that marijuana is equal with alcohol so why not legalize marijuana? So why did that one drink lead to stronger drugs and death but marijuana won't?

He was a junkie, plain and simple. There should be no sugar coating the facts because he was a famous actor. At his level of addiction (50 bags), if he did not have money to buy the drugs he would have been mugging people for money.

He appears to be a long-term junkie who ran out of time. This is no different than the hard-core street junkies except that no one looked for their killers. Sad, but true.
