Sid Caesar

Comedy Legend Dead At 91

2/12/2014 10:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Comedian Sid Caesar -- one of the kings of television comedy in the 1950s -- has died at the age of 91.

Caesar came out of the Catskills comedy circuit ... hitting the big time in the early days of TV with his variety program, "Your Show of Shows" ... and later, "Caesar's Hour."

He often starred alongside comedienne Imogene Coca ... and many of his writers -- Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon and Woody Allen -- went on to become huge stars in their own right.

No word on a cause of death ... but Caesar died at home.

He had three children. His wife died in 2010.

He was way before my time as was Imogene Coca. But I know they were giants in their day. RIP.

Sid and Florence left three great kids.

It hasn't always been easy for the kids.

In his later years Sid mentored many of today's best.

Who'd call the house and get network and/or studio advice - i.e. issues these comics were having.

He's remained close to the other comedy legends of his time -

The Reiner's and Brook's, etc.

Loved dogs more than you can possibly imagine.

Hated salt with a vengeance.

In fact conversations with Sid often began with sodium:

"How much SALT do you have in your diet."

The flags should be at half-mast today.

Especially at NBC.

An unbelievable treasure, man and family.

"Call me, Meesh..."

Funny Sid story:

Sid was aghast when...

... a year or so BEFORE Florence Caesar's death?

Sid got a 40K bill from a nearby Beverly Hills dentist.

"Implants Mrs. Caesar had put quietly in."

=She wanted to go out with perfect teeth.

Sid's dream was no-trace-of-salt at Sid's autopsy.

"This man has absolutely NO salt in his body!"

Guy was lifting weights until his final days.

That's how the Caesar's roll - no excuses.

Profoundly funny family and people - serious treasures.

My only Sid Caesar-grief comes around the fact...

Sid never got to play TARZAN.

On account of that's WHO Sid was.

My all-time favorite Sid and Florence Caesar story:

Sid, even in a Los Angeles winter, like the house cold.

Florence, on the other hand?

... felt a house needed to be like a sauna or steam room.

So Sid would sneak around his own house.

Turning the heat down to 45.

Opening all of the windows.

While ever-mindful Florence?

Turned heat BACK to 93 - closed all the windows.

Even after Florence died back in 2010?

Sid would check the house.

Make certain she wasn't CLOSING the windows.

Most un-pretentious Hollywood family ever.

Tremendous guy, tremendous family, heavy loss.

Last thing you'd expect Sid to be mesmerized with?

Especially Quantum_Physics.

ATE it up, read and watched anything and everything.

You were to TIP-toe around Sid's house...

Be very quiet and still.

When an A-and- E show about Physics was on.

Even Sid's dogs wouldn't bark.

F.Y.I., the man to Sid's left is Howard Morris aka Ernest T. Bass of "The Andy Griffith Show".

Clyde T.M. Nestra

The man put on a LIVE 90 MINUTE show every Saturday night! Unimaginable today, but that is what they did. Sid was amazing in his own right, but was supported by so many other true greats. And he was the first to admit it. Man, these people worked SO hard! Ninety-one...a damn fine run.
