David Letterman

I'm Retiring

4/3/2014 1:32 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

David Letterman, the longest-serving late-night talk show host in TV history, has just announced his retirement.

Letterman made the announcement during the taping of his show Thursday in New York, telling the audience his last show will take place in 2015.

He told the audience ... he's turning 67 and wants to spend more time with his family.  Dave went on to say he'd be retiring in the next year or 2.  The audience thought he was joking because he said, "Finally Paul and I can get married."

Johnny Depp then came on and told Dave people backstage were weeping.  It appears Dave's staff knew of the announcement and many were backstage.

During his announcement, Dave said he started in the business when he was 34 so he's been doing it for half his life, and now it was time to be with his son.

Letterman began his Hollywood career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1970s, appearing several times on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." He got his morning show in 1980 and began his late night career in 1982 on NBC with "Late Night with David Letterman."

11 years later in 1993, Letterman moved to CBS to host "The Late Show with David Letterman," after Jay Leno was tapped to replace Johnny Carson on NBC.

Letterman's CBS contract is scheduled to expire next year and Letterman won't be re-upping.

He is a gentleman of the highest quality. He can make you think and laugh. He never had to use four letter words. His guests were intelligent(as was he)His dry humor and body language is the best in humor. His give and take with his band ledader is hilarious, and he never made me feel uncomfoirtable about who he talked about and what he said about them.He knows how to be a wit,a humourist ,and not a "comic" I will miss him,as will many of my friends and neighbors. We used to talk about his show the day after. He is comes that word again an'ICON" But he really fits that word.

The Velcro suit and the Alka-Seltzer suit were among the best. Too old for most TMZers. When he brought on the doctors who saved his life. Confessing his infidelity. Pretty special moments.

Until this picture, I never realized just how yellow Letterman's teeth are. I don't know why he's retiring now, it's not like he has a tough job. Sits at a desk and chats with people, so stressful.

One less lowlife liberal on tv..oh nvm, he'll probably just be replaced. Liberals are like ****roaches, there's always a new one coming out of the crevices.

Thank God one less unfunny pervy, senile liberal who used his show to push the sickening liberal left wing obama agenda

Does anyone watch late night talk shows other than old people? One less moron thinking he's hilarious running his mouth for an hour every night. Next ax that uber tool Fallon and limit late night to Ferguson, Conan and Kimmel. At least they are so.ewhat funny from pieces you see on The Soup.

You can tell the ages here from the comments. Don't respect him, but know this: When he and Leno started head to head, Dave had higher ratings. When the OJ trial started, Leno did jokes about it, including four robed Asian men called "The Dancing Judge Ito's". Leno's ratings improved. When they asked Dave why no OJ jokes from him, he said, "Double murders don't crack me up". Judge according.

"Johnny Depp then came on and told Dave people backstage were weeping."

Of course they were crying, they just found out they all are going to be unemployed.

A true legend he will be missed in late night

Dave never reached his ratings potential because of terrible writers. His opening monologue is terrible, and thats the most important part of the show. Leno and Carson had great monologues-and great writers. You have to hook the viewer in the first 10 minutes. Sorry to see you go Dave, but you should of fired your writers years ago!
