Jay Z

Alleged Extortion Plot Over $20 Mil Recordings

4/21/2014 11:19 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0420-jay-z-tmz-01A collection of Jay Z master recordings -- valued between $15 and $20 MILLION  -- is at the center of an alleged theft and extortion plot ... and TMZ has learned, police have already nabbed the tapes.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... a producer named Chauncey Mahan -- who worked with Jay Z from 1998-2002 -- was questioned Friday in connection with the alleged plot.

Here's the backstory ... Jay Z's Roc-A-Fella Records recorded a boatload of master recordings between 1998 - 2002.  We're told in 2002 the masters went  missing -- Jay Z and his people assumed they were lost.

Fast forward to this past Friday.  Mahan apparently had a number of the masters in his Northridge, CA storage facility.  Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Mahan allegedly contacted Live Nation -- which has a joint venture with Jay Z called Roc Nation -- and said he would either let the tapes go up for auction or give them the tapes for a $100K "storage fee."  We're told Mahan eventually agreed to take $75K.

We're told on Friday Mahan went to the storage facility to seal the deal with Jay Z's people.  Little did he know the LAPD had  been contacted by Jay Z's people and showed up. We're told cops then detained Mahan and he agreed to come into the station for questioning. He also agreed to let the LAPD take possession of the tapes until a judge determines ownership.

Mahan was not arrested, but our sources say the Beverly Hills PD is investigating the extortion allegations because that's where Live Nation is  based.  We're also told Jay Z's people filed a grand larceny complaint Friday with the NYPD and that investigation is ongoing.

In February of 1998, unsigned -albeit acclaimed-
Social Raptivist "The Gangsta of Love" recorded
"Freaky Deaky World. The song, a scathing-indictment
of both Society and the Music Industry, would include
a chorus consisting of "Children" singing,
"It's a Freaky Deaky World that We live in Today......"
The song was then sent to several major record-labels,
92.3 The Beat (L.A.), and Source Magazine.

Within a year-later, Jay-Z would release "his" song,
"Hard Knock Life", featuring a chorus of Children
singing, "It's a Hard Knock Life....."

RIAA, NARAS,BMI, Rock-A-Fella Records, Live Nation,
Roc-Nation, Et Al:
A Righteous judgement, has been delivered.
Notice, is SERVED:
ALL, in -near- DUE time.

You know some people will never quit I know for a fact these so called stars that have people work with them on music are as low s they come. Any subcontracting person that works with any music artist on their music has sole rights and ownership to whatever mix tapes that were done. How can tapes be stolen when they were never in the procession of JayZ and his people. The people that doing the business for JayZ are the ones who is trying to bring a good persons name down in the mud for their benefit. What is up with these music artist. They trying to hurt the people that helped on their projects. THIS IS TO JAYZ, ROCK NATION AND THE LIARS OF LIVE NATION. YALL ARE FOUL AS HELL. YALL KNOW THOSE TAPES WERE NEVER IN YALLS POSSESSION FROM THE START. WHY HAVE YOUR PEOPLE TRY AND GET THAT MAN IN TROUBLE ON YALLS LIE. YES I AM STICKING UP FOR HIM. YOU SO CALLED FAMED PEOPLE TRY TO BRING GOOD PEOPLE DOWN SO YOU ALL DON'T LOOK BAD IN THE PUBLIC EYE. KARMA IS GOING TO HIT YALL HARD. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH ISN'T IN YOUR SO CALLED LIVE NATION AS PEOPLE WHO WENT TO SEE MR. MAHAN. NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST HIM WILL PROSPER!!!!!!

Live Nation is not telling the whole story. They knew they never had the tapes in their possession. Any producer that helps a artist on their music is the rightful owner to that music. If Jay Z , Live Nation and Rock Nation was so interested in the tapes wy wait so many years to finally get in contact with Mr. Mahan and then wen they do they lie about the whole thing to make someone look bad all because they don't want to pay Mr. Mahan for them. That's the whole thing it boils down to is money. Hell they spend that much partying and staying weeks at a time in motels. Really Jay Z your people are liars and you think you have the best people working for you well you wrong. So Jay Z be the so called man you are and step your ass up because you know you didn't own them tapes. I bet 9 times out of 10 Jay Z don't know what goes on with any of his businesses. He only knows what is told to him. Sad. Sad Sad.

Mr. Mystery

@Sandra H: You make a valid point.
You see, these thugs are essentially business-partners
with major-corporations, i.e. Universal-MCA, Sony, Et Al,
and often utilize foul and fraudulent practices.
Yet, like most involved with "Corporate America", they
are seemingly given legal carte blanche, with the corporations and their vast resources.

This, shall no longer be tolerated.
