Forbes to Dr. Dre

Not So Fast ...

You're No Billionaire

5/9/2014 1:31 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Dr. Dre
better stop counting his chickens before they hatch -- calling himself the "first billionaire in hip hop" -- a rep for Forbes tells TMZ, once the $3.2 Billion Apple deal is finalized ... the rap mogul will NOT hit the billion dollar mark.

Forbes Assistant Managing Editor for Wealth tells us ...  they've done the math, and after state and federal taxes ... Dre will be worth in the neighborhood of $800 million.

It appears Dre only owns 25% of the company ... so the max he'd make off the sale is $800 MIL.   After state and federal taxes, he's left with $480 MIL, and when you add in Dre's other assets, that's how Forbes now comes up with $800 MIL.  Close but no cigar.

The editor says, "Not quite enough to debut on the Forbes 400 but plenty for bragging rights.”

In the words of Ice Cube ... check yo self before you wrickity-wreck yo self.

That Forbes rep knows nothing. He/she is not taking into account the nature of the sale. Is the sale cash, stocks, or both? If it's stock, the value will grow and Dre won't need to pay taxes until after he cashes out. He may wait years . The most important aspect is that the sale's profits will allow it to have capital gain earnings, which will substantially reduce the tax owed.

The article says he'll gain 480 Million from the deal after taxes. Countless Forbes articles online says Dre is worth 550 Million already. (http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eeel45ejkjl/2-andre-dr-dre-young-550-million/ ) Add 550 and 480 and you've got over a Billion!!! Did Forbes forget they already valued Dre at 550 just recently ?

He donated $75M to USC in February of this year. He can now write that off. He'll be paying less tax. Plus, I'm sure he has a good accountant. Perhaps he'll form some non-profits and dump some of that money in there and write that off as well. Not so fast, Forbes.
