0728_torrin-lawrence_gettyTeam USA sprinter Torrin Lawrence -- one of the best sprinters in the country -- died Monday morning after his car was struck by a tractor trailer ... officials confirm.

The 25-year-old -- who recently won a gold medal with the U.S. in the 4x400 relay at the IAAF World Relays -- was driving in Georgia around 1:40 AM when his car blew a tire and came to a stop.

Lawrence got out of the car to call 911 -- but a big rig struck the vehicle ... which knocked the car into Torrin. Lawrence died in the wreck.

USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel issued a statement saying, "Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply."

Lawrence was a standout at the University of Georgia -- and holds the NCAA record for fastest indoor 300m sprint. For more sports stories, check out tmzsports.com!
