Doc Gooden Church and Medication Helped Me Beat 'Massive Depression'

8/24/2016 8:18 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
Breaking News

Doc Gooden says he fell into a "massive depression" after his mother died back in July -- but says he's now feeling great thanks to church and the right medication.

The ex-Mets pitcher sat down with Brandon Steiner in the wake of Darryl Strawberry's allegations that he's a "complete junkie addict" whose life is in danger.

"[I'm] feeling great," Gooden said ... "And I think the things that happened in the last couple days is a test to really see where I was at."

Gooden says he went through a tough time in the wake of his mother's passing -- but says, "I seek help for that, dealing with depression with that, got some great medication, things started going up."

"I'm fine. I'm healthy. I haven't done anything wrong. I haven't broken the law or anything like that."

Doc Gooden I'm Done with Strawberry Beef ... 'Moving On With My Life'

Exclusive Details

0823-doc-gooden-darryl-strawberry-TMZ-01Doc Gooden says he's officially ending his public feud with Darryl Strawberry ... telling TMZ Sports, "I'm moving on with my life" after trading nasty barbs with his ex-Mets teammate.

Things went south between Doc and Darryl on Thursday -- when Doc no-showed at an event and Strawberry chalked it up to drugs.

"My fear is that -- and I know addiction -- and my fear is people that don’t change, they die," Strawberry told the crowd ... "I just hope the light comes on soon before it’s too late."

Gooden was PISSED -- and responded on Monday night by not only declaring he's been sober for 4 years ... but also accusing Strawberry of infidelity.

"Darryl has a drug rehab in his name, he is supposed to be a pastor. I call him Lucifer," Doc said.

But Gooden now tells TMZ Sports he's calling off his attack -- and officially ENDING his war on Strawberry.

"I've been doing interviews for over 2 days. I'm sorry, I'm over this. I'm done with the Straw stuff. I'm moving on with my life."

Alex Rodriguez Handing Out Cash In Bev Hills ... For Football Jerseys

8/19/2016 7:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Alex Rodriguez -- who made roughly $480 MILLION during his MLB career -- pulled out a wad of cash in Bev Hills Thursday to help out a kid who said he was raising money for football jerseys.

A-Rod was leaving Wally's Wine and Spirits when the kid walked right up to the baseball star and made his pitch.

So how much did Alex shell out?

We stopped the video and zoomed in ... looks like $6.

Hey, better than nothing.

Albert Pujols Cousin Sues for $27 Mil ... You Wrongly Labeled Me a Murderer

8/13/2016 12:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0812-albert-pujols-GETTY-01MLB superstar Albert Pujols is being sued by his own cousin -- who claims the L.A. Angels slugger ruined his life and aspiring baseball career by wrongly labeling him as a murderer.

The man behind the lawsuit is Wilfrido Juan Pujols -- Albert's cousin -- who was the passenger in a 2007 police chase in Missouri in which his car struck and killed a man.

Wilfrido's older brother was behind the wheel that day -- and was charged with multiple felonies including 2nd degree felony murder. Wilfrido was NOT charged with a crime. In fact, he claims he was trying to STOP his brother, who was messed up on drugs and booze.

The mother of the victim wrote a message to Albert's foundation in 2014 -- accusing the MLB star and his wife of financially aiding the brothers who she claimed "murdered" her son.

Albert's wife, Deidre, responded to the message with a statement condemning BOTH of the brothers -- saying, "These two young men have ruined many lives."

The victim's mother posted Deidre's statement on her Facebook page.

Wilfrido says it was that statement that has destroyed his reputation -- because people now think he played an active role in the deadly incident.

In his lawsuit, Wilfrido says the statement was approved by Albert -- and ruined his reputation in the baseball community and derailed his playing career.

Now, he wants the Pujols to shell out more than $27 MILLION to make things right ... don't hold your breath.

We reached out to Albert's camp -- so far, no word back.

Ozzie Smith I Coulda Been an Olympic Gymnast ... Maybe!

8/13/2016 12:35 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

He's the best tumbler in the history of Major League Baseball -- but was habitual flipper Ozzie Smith good enough to make the Olympic gymnastics team??

That's exactly what we asked the Hall of Famer when we saw him in L.A. Thursday -- and he seems pretty confident ... had he set his mind to it back in the day.

Smith was one hell of an athlete -- and seems fairly confident that he had the ability to succeed in gymnastics ... if he really honed in on it.

And after watching some of his famous flips ... we believe it.

Billy Bob Thornton If A-Rod Gets In Hall Of Fame ... All PED Users Have To

8/13/2016 12:25 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Billy Bob Thornton thinks PED users in the Hall Of Fame are kinda like Lay's ... you can't have just one ... saying if A-Rod sneaks into Cooperstown then you gotta let everyone else in too.

BBT came on the "TMZ Sports" TV show and talked about Kenny Lofton's strong comments to us that under no circumstances should A-Rod even be CONSIDERED for the Hall of Fame.

While Thornton wasn't quite as hard on A-Rod as Lofton was (who could be?) he made it clear it's not just about Alex ... 'cause if you vote him in, you gotta vote in a whole generation of cheaters.

Peep the clip -- and be sure to watch "TMZ Sports" weeknights on FS1.

Yankees Hero Jim Leyritz I Woulda Let A-Rod Play ... He's Earned It

8/12/2016 3:42 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jim Leyritz -- the guy who blasted one of the most famous home runs in Yankees World Series History -- says if he was running his ex-team ... he'd let A-Rod play as long as he wanted to.

A-Rod had said publicly that he wanted to play 3rd base during his final game Friday night -- but Yanks skipper Joe Girardi nixed the idea ... only allowing him to be a DH instead.

Some people are upset saying A-Rod deserved to go out on his own terms -- others say screw him, he's a cheater and doesn't deserve anything.

So, we put it up to Leyritz -- who played with Joe G. back in the day -- and he says in this situation, he disagrees with his old teammate.

"The guy's one of the greatest 5 players to ever play ... I would've played him until he wanted to stop."

Leyritz also says he thinks the decision may have been out of Joe's hands -- and even suggests Yanks brass took measures to ensure A-Rod wouldn't reach 700 home runs in pinstripes.

Will Ferrell Roasts Clayton Kershaw 'Supposedly On the DL'

8/12/2016 7:57 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw got served at his own charity ping-pong event Thursday night ... courtesy of Will Ferrell.

Will hosted Clayton's Ping Pong 4 Purpose event at Dodger Stadium -- which raises money for people in need all over the world.

After jokingly warning the guests about a man vs. coyote "danger round," Ferrell decided to clown Kershaw a little bit.

"How lucky are we to have the best pitcher in baseball on the Dodgers?" Ferrell said while standing next to the injured superstar.

"He couldn't be here tonight, but we got this guy who's supposedly on the DL!"

The tourney was fun -- with Adrian Gonzalez and Mario Lopez taking on Diplo and Joc Pederson in a 2-on-2 match.

But the love story's over ... Heather filed docs in L.A. County Superior Court citing irreconcilable differences.

Seems things soured recently ... they posed for a coupley pic together just last month.

0811-JP-Howell-twitterHeather lists the date of separation as Monday, August 8th ... the same day she filed the docs.

She's also asking for spousal support and wants to drop "Howell" from her name ASAP.

The couple has no kids together.
