John Mayer underwent surgery this week to remove a granuloma from just above his vocal cord, the singer announced on his blog.

Mayer said the surgery was necessary after his attempts to rest his voice didn't help.

Mayer announced the ailment last month and pushed back the release of his new album until 2012.

John Mayer is canceling two concerts and postponing his album until next year because he's having problems with his vocal cords.

Mayer revealed the problem on his blog, saying he had developed a granuloma in his throat.  Granulomas are nodules, and they vary from harmless to very serious. John didn't elaborate.

He was scheduled to perform at the iheartradio Music Festival in Las Vegas next week and a show with Tony Bennett in Los Angeles.

Mayer also said his next album, which was due later this year, will now be pushed back to 2012.

He says he'll devote his time to "writing and composing more music and kicking an empty soup can around the West Village."

John Mayer hit the town last night with a few guy friends and three lady friends -- but at the end of the night, one woman apparently didn't make the cut.


Mayer was spotted out at a martini bar in Hollywood and then later on at the Chateau Marmont. Mayer traveled with his pack of pals all night, until it came time to leave the Chateau ... and one of the girls got left on the curb.

Whatever happened to "leave no woman behind"?

Tony Romo didn't get the memo about all the celeb breakups this week -- instead the Dallas' Cowboys QB got engaged to his girlfriend Candice Crawford.



Romo reportedly popped the question while celebrating Candice's 24th birthday on Thursday.

Candice is Chace Crawford's younger sister and she's a sports reporter for KDAF ... the CW station in Dallas which, appropriately, first reported the engagement.

Romo is the second Jessica Simpson ex to put a ring on it recently.

Kim Kardashian and John Mayer have "gone out" together a few times since they were seen hanging out in NYC recently ... and sources tell TMZ they've totally "hit it off."

Mayer was out in NYC yesterday -- and when we asked about LeBron James, dude BS'd for a little while before finally admitting, "I play music ... we don't like sports ... we got beat up by guys like LeBron James."

He also told us he's sick of "faking" interest just to fit in with other "alpha males."

And even though he talks a big game, John also told us, "Whatever the next sport is, I'll pretend like I know that too."

Proving that LeBron James isn't the only one who can announce where he'll be playing, John Mayer would like the world to know he'll be taking his talents to Cleveland. And South Beach. And New York. And New Jersey ...

Backstage at last night's CMT Music Awards in Nashville, John Mayer's hairy stomach was no competition for the ripped, shaved, smooth mid-section of "Jersey Shore" tanned ham The Situation.
